    Default Key Programming Question

The seller had lost his key, and had to pay for a whole ignition, he bought a spare key, which I had cut, but it appears that it wasn't programmed. Is this a dealer only thing, or can I do it?

OEM keys for pre-2014 models can be added to the security system using a process with a "master" key. Dealers will have them but private individuals can also purchase master keys. There are some threads that go into detail on that if you do an advanced search on the forum.

As was said, you can also purchase a clonable key blank, get it cut and cloned and have no problem. The master key costs quite a bit, and OEM keys are also pricey. I got some of the ILCO blanks for around $7, had them cut fairly cheaply and then cloned. Some I had cloned at ACE hardware, and some I had cloned at Lowes. IIRC, Lowes cloned them for free. Some folks claim that using cloned keys will mess up your bike, I stopped using the OEM key months ago and have had no issues.

Have it cloned by a local locksmith, or even a place where you can get keys cut.
We have a Home Depot up here by us that clones keys..

As the seller found out you must have a minimum of 2 working keys. It's expensive if you lose both. If the spare key that you had cut is a Spyder key call the dealer and ask how much it would cost to program the Spyder to accept it. There have been reports of dealers charging high fees for a 15 minute job. All keys must be given to the dealer when the new key is programed or they will no longer work. The other posts have covered your other options.

Note to other people reading this thread. Some of the information posted here applies to 2013 and older Spyders.

    Default Let's see..!!

most big key shops can make these keys now for pre 2014 units. They use the aprilla motorcycle blanks and here blank cutting and programming runs about $60.00. You need one working key. Someday the dealer will get real with their prices. Those with the 2014 will have to wait till the key shops catch up. Those new ignitions have had some issues....

    Default Key replacement

While at the local Dept. of Motor Vehicles obtaining my new spyder plate, my one key was lost/stolen at the clerk's counter while doing paperwork. Being the only spyder in the parking lot and the key being clearly marked "CAN AM," I was now at risk of someone stealing my spyder. I went to the dealer and ordered a blank replacement key. The dealer had the new key cut to match my remaining key and reprogramed both keys and the spyder to a new code so that the lost key would no longer function. Total cost was $50 + tax. Programing only took minutes and was free. The lost key however can open the front and rear trunk but it won't start my spyder.

It's never a bad idea; to keep an un-chipped dummy key in a handy place...

Turned out that the dealer agreed to program it for free, as he was to do it for the previous owner and didn't. Went there tonight and got it done. I checked around a bit and couldn't find a shop that could clone it.

Having a blank cut key in your wallet, makes sense.

    Thanks for all the help.

    It is...
Normally; you send him one of your keys, and he uses it to program the new key for you. You then have to get it cut to fit your ignition switch, once you get it home.
I tried sending him a 2014 key; he could do anything with it.
But he DID give me some pretty good advice about what the options are for it.

Not here. Went to Home Depot yesterday just to do this and they had no idea what I was talking about and furthermore did not have a single key blank that would work to make a duplicate just to open the frunk.

Remember the 2014 key is different from previous years. If you have a 2014 make sure the key you buy is for the 2014.

Most of the normal places you can go to get an automotive key made are not going to have a blank that fits the Spyder. ILCO makes a blank that will fit the pre-2014 Spyders and has the correct chip (several posts on this not quite a year ago). You can order them online, I got mine for about $7 a piece. Then you take the blank and your Spyder key to a place that cuts keys (I have used ACE Hardware and Lowes) and have them cut and clone it. If there cloning machine can read the Spyder key, then they can clone it. All that was explained in detail in the previous threads. Bottom line is that I have five keys cloned onto ILCO blanks that I use with my Spyder that fit on a keyring. The original Spyder keys I have stored away.

    Hi Iowa,

Re: Went to Home Depot yesterday just to do this and they had no idea what I was talking about

I did the same thing a few months ago based upon advice given on this site. I should have been talking to someone on Mars.

That is why I went with keys4uride; $47.95 and easy peezee.

Read the whole thread. I went to home depot on the advice of this thread. I only wanted a key cut to operate the frunk in an emergency.
    Thanks anyway

As I said in my post, there are several old threads that lay out in great detail where to find keys that will work. Both chipped and non chipped keys were addressed in those threads.

    http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/s...ht=ilco+blanks

The chipped key can be found: http://www.lockpicks.com/aprilia-sco...23rt5-jma.html. If you can't find a non-chipped key in the threads, you could just get one of these and not clone it.

The 2014 uses a different chip than the previous year models. I don't think anyone has yet found a way to clone that one.

I very much doubt any key cutting place will have the blanks in stock. They just would not sell enough. There are lots of choices online.

For those wanting a cloneable blank, look for Ilco/Silca # ZD23RT5 or JMA # KB-TP05ZA-9-P

There are 2 choices for unchipped keys and there may be more. I used this one.

You are correct; the chip in the 2014 keys has MUCH stronger Kung-Fu...
You have to track down a suitable key blank and chip (TP-12; I think!), get the key cut for the ignition switch, and TEHN take your new key, ALL of your old keys, and your bike to the dealer...
