iPod Compatibility
The owner's manual for my new 2014 RT-S lists several iPod models that are compatible with the adapter in the trunk. Unfortunately, none of those listed are the latest models. My question is will the adapter cable work with the latest models? If not, where can I get an adapter cable that will work?
Thanks!

My 2012 RT came with a cable that would plug into any MP3 player.

That's correct; only the Ipods give you the ability to change songs and playlists.

My 2014 came with both cables as well. Can Am advertises iPod compatibility (also iPhones, and iPads will work), but only those with the older connector. Not all functions are available with the adaptor - haven't played with the adaptor enough to know for sure, but the instruction sheet provided by Apple states that is the case.
I bought a new 5th gen Nano & shuffle to use (my F150 has the exact same issue), from E-bay. Both vehicles will recognize non-apple MP3 players, and allow playback, but no controls - I even have an (ancient) Sony portable CD player that works (playback only). With Apple devices, you have to manually change the MODE, any time you want to override playback, and for some things, you need to be fully stopped too. All in all, a good system. It works well enough that I have never used the radio, and probably never will.

I'm looking for an adapter that will change playlists and artists from the controls on the RT. According to the manual, only certain obsolete iPod players provide that functionality.

Apple/Best Buy & others sell the adaptor. You will have to buy one & try it out. If it doesn't work, take the adaptor back for a refund.... Then buy what you need off Ebay.

You can purchase an Apple lightning adapter cable that will mate the newer equipment to the old style adapter.

But nothing to make a USB thumb drive work?

Exactly! Buy it from Best Buy and keep all the packaging - "no questions asked return policy" within 30 days. My bet is that the 30-pin-to-lightning plug adaptor will allow you to change play lists and skip tunes, etc. It works that way with the entertainment system in my motorhome, which also has the old style iPod 30-pin connector.
I've never tried a newer 8-pin iPod in the Spyder as I use an older iPod with that. However, I will go get my adaptor and try it in the Spyder later today, and then report back on this thread.
Update: The adaptor does work completely. See message #22 below for details.

You know, that is a great idea. I used to ride over there just every once in a while but I haven't been in a long time. As I recall, they have a lot of that kind of stuff. I could even buy a couple to have a spare in case one dies.

Yep, I think i got a 16gb for $35 or $40 and that will hold all the music I need. we are very fortunate to have that so close. I use to have a music teacher in high school named Dan Mann.

Just so everyone knows what Art Mann and I are talking about. We both live near Huntsville, al. About 45 miles away is a city called scottsboro and there is a business there called unclaimed baggage. this business buys all the unclaimed baggage from the major airlines in the U.S. and it is shipped to Scottsboro where they sort threw it and was the clothes. clean up teh electronic and test and make sure there in good working order etc.. They have clothes, electronics, sports equip., just about anything that someone would put in a suitcase for sale at really good prices. and there is only one of these.

That is correct. I just tried it on my 2013 RT. With this Lightning-to-30-pin adapter, you can completely control the new iPods from the multi-function control on the left handle bar. It will also keep the new iPod's charged.
Warning... get an Apple one. Many of the cheaper knock-offs on Ebay and Amazon do not work and/or will not allow you to perform all the functions.

I took the opposite approach.
I had an iPOD touch 32gb and bought my 2010 Spyder after that, so the cable that came with the bike fit perfect.
I bought my 2014 just about 6 weeks ago. I needed a bigger iPOD, so I made sure to get the 4th generation iPOD Touch 64GB off ebay for about $110. The unit is flawless, and looks brand new
Not only did I save a ton of money over the latest version, it also works perfectly with the audio system.
With 20/20 hindsight, I could have saved more money by getting an iPOD with cosmetic damage. The thing just sits in the back all the time. No one ever looks at it.
I may just look for a cheap ugly unit and keep the flawless one for personal use.
If it ain't broke, don't break it.
