Exactly! Any effective fix is NOT going to be cheap. Which is what prompted my statement above.

All it took was a police officer's bike to burn. No mention of the RT's? Hopefully this will all come to light and be fixed for all involved!!

Statistics can be interpreted in a lot of ways.

Here is a revision covering the situation based on 2013 only.

If we look at the 2013's (have to guesstimate about 7429 sold) based on 52000 sold in 7 model years. 2008 - 2014 (52000/7)

How many fires? Have to guesstimate about 10 for the 2013 models 10/7429 That gives a fire statistic of .001346076 over the 2013 model year.

My opinion as a firefighter, one fire for a motorcycle wouldn't be suspicious, 10 fires, you have a problem

    1) It's a shame that it took a government official on one to get the safety council involved.

    2) "if" any thing comes of this it would be having the dealers swap some parts...and I for one don't want my bike tied up at a dealer for 6 months while this is being resolved.

    3) I wonder how long this thread will stay open?

Just going to toss out some fix ideas for the RT.

    1. Totally WELL insulated Gas tank.

    2. Redesigned intake resonator that will hold the Evap canister in it at the top of the bike(also keeps it cool).

    3. Redesigned Cat I have seen them 1/3 the size of what we have.

    4. Jet Hot Coated headers enough of the shade tree fix wrapping.

    5. Venturi vented underbody covers.

    6. Increase purge cycle and incorporate a sensor to ensure it is working.

    7. Redesigned brake MC. Plastic and headers do not play well together there are other materials that take heat much better.

    8. All vacuum and any other hoses changed to silicon. Enough of the lowest bidder stuff.

I think this is a good start any other ideas? We all know the source is unvented heat under the Tupperware. Protect better and Vent better is the solution IMHO.

not only fuel lines...my ST's spark plug wires started fall apart...made the bike have 800 to 2000 rpm's at idle.....when it hits under 1000rpm's it beeps...all this happened in a nano second.....so anything rubber will need replacing.....fuel lines being most important......I have a 2 page list of all my problems....no one wants to go there again....as of now my bike is running good.....but it took over a year of fighting for what I knew the ST needed......NHSTA has 31 complaints on 2013 RT...12 on 2013 Spyder and 9 on ST's.....4 of those complaints are mine....if you have a problem with your 2013 go to www.nhsta.gov

So this pretty much sucks. My 2012 RTS is less than 3 weeks old and I have significant gas fume issues and the only parking I have for it is my in-house garage.

Basically this investigation means I have to worry even more about a) the bike catching fire while I'm riding it or b) the bike catching fire after I park it, burning down my house as well.

Yeah, not pleased at all right now. :/

Lets hope the address the heat issue for all makes and model & year. But I highly doubt it. We cant even ride ours in the summer time in AZ without the wife getting her legs burned up around the seat area.

It's a start and I am glad to see it. Hopefully no more bandaids in the future and a real fix. Boy the resale value of the 13's just took a major hit even more than they all ready have.

This very interesting esp. the % of 50K. What about the % of the mileage driven? There are only handful of us driving 10k/ year.

Another issue is the fires reported here are not all. Some owners are not even on SL. Hopefully this will bring good things for all of us to enjoy our.

I can't figure out if the Morgantown WV Police Syder is a 2012 or a 2013. They have a press release from October of 2012 saying that they took delivery of one but it doesn't say the year. The investigator that I spoke with did not mention the police Spyder fire but he led me to believe that the focus of their investigation is to determine if the recall work took care of the problem on the 2013s.

I really don't see them looking into complaints of hot right feet though.

They didn't for years. Why would they bother now. Like the report says. Requests for comment have been made. Crickets! Nothing new there either.

I dont either, but I wish or hope they would look into the heat coming up from the panels where it has literally has given folks 2nd degree burns on their legs. Im not referring to the hot right foot area.

It's good to see that so far no one has been hurt. The nature of these fires in how they burn so hot and so quickly definitely has the potential to cause serious harm if someone isn't paying attention while riding and if they don't react quickly enough.

All new designs have their issues. Some more so than others. While I'm politely frustrated, even after my incident I am not anti-BRP or anti-Spyder. I just hope that BRP can fix and improve upon the design they currently have. Maybe in 10 years Spyders and vehicles like them will set the bar for safety and you'll see them everywhere. That'd be pretty cool.

I'm a young guy but I'm afraid my riding days may be over. I'm personally not opposed to owning another Spyder but I don't think I'll ever be able to convince my wife to get on another one now. And after seeing what happened to my friends wife after they wrecked a Harley I won't put my wife's safety at risk on 2 wheels again. I guess I could ride alone, but if I can't share the experience with her it's not worth doing. I guess I'll have to look into other hobbies.

Dat Guy, that is sad but understandable. If I wasn't a rider and my husband had been the one on the Spyder when it burned, I'd probably feel the same as your wife.

I'm nearing 18,000 miles on my 2014 and I have ridden it in extreme heat for long periods of time and it has not had any issues. It has been ridden as hard or harder than my 2013 was so I feel that it has passed the test.

The number 0.001346 is the proportion (10/7429). The percent is 0.1346% which is between one seventh and one eighth of one percent.

I took a heat reading with a infrared thermometer on mine after a short ride on cooler temps the left side panel had a pretty high temp and the bottom bolt for the side panel was very hot and that's where my leg hits and has burned my leg through pants
