when do failures occur most often
Just curious, does your bike fail at startup or on the road. If there is a third option I'd like to hear it.

All of our orange screens have popped up after ridden for a while and no where near home. Luckily, nothing too serious and was able to clear the screan and make it back home.

Sorry..!!
can't vote on this one. Mine has never failed so can't say. For the relatively short time I have been here it's been pretty even. Better question is driver malfunction or manufacturers defect...

So far the only failure on my 2014 RTS has been the nut behind the wheel!
-
The 3rd option is no failure. I bought two new Spyders over the past four years and neither has had a failure. (exception was the dealer that delivered our RTS with a setup issue) Am I scared of a failure? I would have to say yes. I think these are way more temperamental then most any motorcycle or cager.

Two issues, both on the road and both in the first 3500 miles . . . However, the last 2200 miles have been great!

I can't vote either. We have two Spyders. The 2012 has had no issues. The 2010 has had some issues but nothing that has caused it to "fail".

Failure to start
Never had an orange screen or warning with 2010 RTSE5. Failure to start? Once due to dead battery, once due to nut on the seat and once TBD.

LOL, I was. Awesome time on the cruise and excursions. I'm sure this group isn't interested in whale and eagle pictures though. LOL
Nothing prompted this question. I just thought about it while going down the buffet line one day and wondered if the question was ever asked. The only Orange Display I get now is because my rear trunk lid has popped loose. It does this frequently. The strut won't keep the lid up so I'm not concerned.
I have had a couple failures: at Spyderfest last year which may have been a bad battery so of course startups were "iffy". I once had a dead battery at a cemetery. Must be a message there somewhere I suppose. I also had a a clutch hub disintegrate outside Durango 2 years ago while coming home on Poop Out Hill 10 miles west of town. Fires surrounded us at the time so it was an interesting morning. Fun Bike Center in Durango took good care of me but I had to rent a car for a week. Thank God I was so close to town.
I have never been in LM on my 2010 RT. My 08 RS however, was a different story. But I miss that bike sometimes.

Brian, my 2010 went into Limp Mode the morning after I bought it and that was the only time I remember. It did break down on me a couple of times, one was on my way to Spyders in the Smokies but RT Sales in Zulu, IN got me back on the road. Then there was that epic failure last summer on the 2013...memories

Brake Failure
Orange screen of death has been coming on while I'm high in the Rockies thinking "oh crap, no brakes?" Luckily, that never happened, the limp mode sign would appear then disappear, no problem. I imagine the rear brake pads need replacing and this is my warning. Pads sure don't seem to last long... 10k miles? Fixable.
Discovered today that the Brake Failure screen/Limp mode warning occurred due to low brake fluid in one reservoir. Added some and no more problem.

It depends on what you mean by "failure" My spyder had a clean record until I put in HID's from xenon. Now crazy stuff happens at startup only (so far).
Crazy stuff at startup List
1. Most often I have to hit the mode button twice
2. A few times it wont go into 1st or reverse, fix is to take key out for 30secs and try again
3. A few times it has "Check Transmission" error on screen. Fix is to take key out for 30secs and try again.
This all started when I put HID's in. Thankfully the Spyder seems to clear itself. I think this is contributed by the power draw from when the HID's first power up.
The upside is the spyder overall takes less from the battery. How do I know. When I plug it into the trickle charger it turns green right away now. Before It was an overnight charge to get the battery to turn "fully charged".
