    Default Remember The Ventures?

Remember the 60's band The Ventures? I do. I probably have all of their albums. Their music was played a lot in Viet Nam. In the clubs, the hooches, the hangars or wherever. Even some of the "garage" bands over there played Ventures music. What I didn't know was that Air Force general George Babbitt was the original drummer for the Ventures. This video is from 1996.

The look on the General's face; can't help but bring a smile to your own...
He truly was just 17 again; for a little while!

Thanks for the video. Loved that stuff. Brings back some great memories. I learned some of their tunes when I first started playing guitar.

I mimicked his style when I learned to play drums. I didn't realize he wasn't the same drummer for Wipe Out OR that I served in the Air Force along side him. Thanks for the memory.

Spyder_cowgirl told me about this thread. The Ventures is all I listen to. So many these days butcher what the human instrument can actually do. Can't stand the yelling. The Ventures for the most part keep their trap shut and just let the true music come through. They've gone through a lot of players in their long run and have had several groups try to copy them but I think they are tops. I've got one called Swamp Rock that very few have even heard. Guess it didn't go over big but there are some great tunes on that 8 track now CD if you can find it.

I have it on LP. This was the only group that could come close to the Ventures in that genre.

Ray, they were a good group. Started out as a backup group. I think they did backup for Cliff Richard at one time. They and the Tornados were out at the same time.

Jerbear, you're welcome. Friend of mine is an old 130 guy. He said he would have never believed it had he not seen the video. He said the then Colonel Babbitt was the DCM and he had to brief him frequently.

Thanks for the post. I met the Ventures back in the early 60's because lead guitarist, Nokie Edwards and (sometimes the whole band) would stop by to visit his brother that lived next door to me in a small apt building. I remember one time Nokie showed up in a brand new Pontiac, so a friend and I walked around the car for a look when we noticed the name "Grand Prix", not realizing "Prix" was a French word, we thought wow , what a strange name for a car.

    Bruiser,
They were originally Cliff Richard and the Drifters until the American Drifters vocal group forced a name change to Cliff Richard and the Shadows.
Hank was one of the more lyrical guitarists around and I, at the time was a more jazz type guitarist having been more keyboard oriented (Hammond organ). We couldn't easily obtain American guitars so I was around when quite a few groups in the UK were using Burns equipment 'cos you couldn't get Fender equipment.
Yes I remember the Tornados and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes, Marty Wilde and the Wildcats.....good music and I can still play the hell out of a lot of it.....and I still use Burns guitars.
