I've got the Missus thinking about this one; we talked about it just about all the way to Honesdale, to meet up with Spydaman60 this morning.
He was breaking his bike out of storage!

    Hi Bob
If you do this mod...... just remove the seat from the trike before you take it all the way off
mark how far back you want the hinge area to be so you can access the gas cap, turn the seat over
DO NOT remove the staples draw a line with a sharpie where the pan is to be cut, at the ends of the
the line you made top and bottom remove about 3 or 4 staples on eather side of the line then make the cut
fold the door back to see how many staples need to be replaced add the velcro and put it back on the Spyder
that's it should take about 1 hour or less depending on how fast you can remove the seat and build up the
guts to cut your seat pan....
Have fun it's a great mod.
    Dave
PS again I wish I had thought of it first....

Don't forget to stuff some rags down the "Unending Holes" to keep any nuts or bolts from dropping down. I got my seat off in a short time when I send it to Utopia for the backrest mod, but getting it back on was a royal bitch for some reason. Waiting to see how you make out on this one; I may well give it a try also.

One of the first things that I do at the start of a project...
...is try to figure out what I can have go wrong!
(When I set my 2010 up to let me know if the rear or side storage compartments was open; the bike ate a small screwdriver, and a 10mm socket)

    Very nice indeed.
I'm wondering how reliable this is in the long term.
Have you found the seat material has held over time with all the flexing ?

I now have almost 11,000 miles on my bike and I use the gas door at every fill up
I do not even think about raising the seat
The seat looks the same and is just as strong as the day I modified it

I noticed it right off... but you said stock seat not backrest on the stock seat
that may be why some missed it. Cool add on, and handy to have I make lots of them.

    Thumbs up thanx

for resurrecting this post...great idea and the way I'll do my RT...I kept looking at ideas with the hinged gas cap screwed to the seat, the auto closing screw on cap under that, etc. I'm feeling the warm fuzzies this mod brings...can't wait to get out the dremel and a new plastic cutting wheel

    Cool

    there's no hinge, per se
the vinyl cover and inside foam act as the hinge

the plastic back is "scored" and broken so that piece of the side of the seat can then swing open

I pulled just enough staples loose from the seat cover to pull the cover out of the way to cut the seat pan with my dremel tool
it was probably 5 or 6 staples each side of the cut at the top and 3 or 4 each side on the bottom...I then used contact cement to reattach the cover to the hard plastic back

I did not cut the foam or the cover as they are the hinge
let's ride safe & be careful out there,
