    Default Rotella T5 & T6 Oil Rated JASO MA/MA2

The T6 Synthetic 5W-40 and T5 Dino 15-40 are now rated by Shell as Jaso Ma2.

The T5 was reported as such, with a quote from Shell, on BOBIOG forum, and I emailed Shell about the T6 and got the same reply. Shell said that they didn't change their formulation and it carried the MA rating before as thats all they tested it for. When they tested it for MA2 it passed. In effect, then, its always been MA/MA2.

Thought it worth reporting as several folks have stated they use it and at least one said he'd been using it for a long time.

Its up to each person to decide for themselves.

Edit. I stand corrected. Here is the Current April 2014 technical data sheet for Rotella T6 5W40 full synthetic:

    http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...hKjVNBD2n7XkGQ

It does indeed now meet JASO MA2 requirements. I will likely use up the Valvoline I already have and use the Rotella going forward as I already use it in most everything else I own.

    Ted ...

Have you or will you be using the T6 5W40 in your 2014 ?

If so, please report how it does for you.

I will likely do the first oil change at 1,000 miles.

    Thanks ...

Bob, haven't decided yet as I have enough Amsoil for two changes and a little Castrol Blend yet to use up. I did my first change, oil only, at 1500 with Castrol and plan on doing another with Amsoil and new filter before I leave for Spyderfest on 28 Apr. That will be about the time for the first service. I may let the dealer put the Amsoil in for me as I'm having some surgery done which will make it diff for me. Normally I much prefer to do my own oil changes. I'll definitely lab test the Amsoil.

At some point, I probably will try Rotella, maybe a blend of T5 & T6. Once we get into hot wx I think T5 would be best. Theres been a couple of bikers that tested T6 on BITOG forum and it didn't hold up so well. However, diff motors and transmissions produce diff results.

Whatever I use, I'll test it around 4-5K to check for shearing. I don't believe for a minute that these motors can go 9000 mile between changes, but hope I'm proven wrong. Cars go that long and even much longer but they don't have wet clutches and gear boxes to chew up the oil.

If I'm not mistaken, T5 is a dino oil. BRP specifies full synthetic or a synthetic blend. Use of the dino oil could jeopardize your warranty (or worse). There is more to oil than the viscosity.

Scotty, you're absolutely right, it is dino. I'm hoping Amsoil will test so well I won't want to try anything else. I've been an Amsoil Preferred Customer for many years. But I do like to tinker and if I find another brand that performs as well at half the price, then I'll go for it.

Identify what you have control over and find peace with what you don't.

They do make it and label it as ATV. Rated Jaso MA/MA2. Would assume its the same basic formulation as "motorcycle" oil, but personally, I'd stick with the 10-40. Just don't get cold enough in our neck of the woods to need a 5W for start up. Also, the wider the viscosity spread, the quicker it will shear. Castrol makes a 5-40 synthetic and you can order it on line if thats what you really want. Prob the same stuff that BRP sells.

    T5 does come in a semi-synthetic
