Micron Muffler Maintenance
We have been talking to Sam at Micron USA and have found out some tips on how to make sure your Micron muffler gives you the best and longest trouble free service.
Micron mufflers like all glass pack mufflers will need periodic re-adjustment or re-packing of the fiberglass packing inside the muffler from time to time. This will vary from bike bike and will depend on many factors such as riding style, speeds, engine size and type, miles of use etc.
What can happen over time is the fiberglass packing can move reward inside the can from use and will expose the front of the muffler body as well as the rubber gasket around the can body to excessive direct exhaust heat and pressure pulses.
This packing can easily be inspected and re-adjusted or replaced as needed with the following procedure.
1) Remove the muffler from the bike.
2) Looking in the outlet end at the 12 o'clock position remove the 5 mm hex head bolt from the muffler. This will remove the outlet end cap from the muffler body.
3) Slide the muffler sleeve off to reveal the inner baffle and fiberglass packing.
4) Next reposition fiberglass packing so it evenly covers the inner muffler core, and after re-wrapping use clear packing tape to hold wrap tight and in place for reassembly.
Note:The packing tape to hold the wrap in place is direct from Micron. However I have found that if you use stainless steel wire to hold the packing tight and in place, it helps to keep it in place longer between maintenance intervals. The choice is up to you as Micron says the factory uses the tape right from Micron.
5) Re-insert the core into the outer sleeve making sure the rubber gaskets at each end are properly positioned.
6) Install the outlet end cap and reinstall the 5 mm bolt into the muffler body to secure end cap in place.
7) Reinstall muffler assembly on bike.
Sam says there is no set in stone time frame as to when your bike will require this maintenance procedure to be done. However, he said as there is no harm in inspecting and or repositioning the packing early, if you have a question as to the status of your's a quick inspection would be a good idea.
He did say that if you have a muffler that has the front rubber gasket starting to slide out, it most likely is because the packing has slid reward and needs to be repositioned or repacked depending on your amount of use.
