Take it away Peter! Every now and then you should take it away, never to be seen again, make believe it's one of those post that have stirred up the hornet's nest and upset the masses, take it away! There is really no useful information!

    Default History on Oil

I welcome a little 'History on Oil.'
The specs on oil have changed. The 'types' of oils we are using have changed. Also the cost of oil will always be going up. BRP Oil has changed along with the times.

So I an using Mobile 1 full synthetic, because BRP doesn't offer it for Spyders. BRP’S Oil is a mixed blend.

BRP's 0/40 is a full synthetic. Though there are many 'Synthetic' oils using a variety of base stocks and additives. Producing a wide variance in manufacturing costs and performance. Just as gasoline varies widely in quality, additives, and octane. So too has the heading of 'Synthetic' become a very large umbrella.

2x on WM ST full synth. oils. Multiple vehicles taken over 200k miles on it.
I used Valvoline MC 10-40w Jaso rated oil in my F3S on its storage oil change.
I do not use overpriced BRP oil in my 1200cc 3 cyl. Rotax dry sump motor BRP sleds, I use the filters but not the oil. 10k miles on my '09 sled on M1 0-40w with no issues. They live at 4000 to 8000 rpm all the time when off idle. Sleds do not have a shared sump like spyders.
BRP specs 0 bottom number now as it keeps its oil inventory simple, one weight/size fits all across the product line. I will not run less than a 10-40w in a motorcycle in summer temps. That's my only oil ''quirk''. Same for power equipment.
A quality full synth. oil, API and JASO certified, and proper oil / filter changes will never do you wrong. I myself am not a fan of overpriced ''boutique'' oils. Lots of folks are brand loyal, I get it, but the price of admission is not worth it to me.

I learned a long time ago, that unless an emergency, one should not MIX oils.
I recommend use what you are using, and if are unhappy with that, change the brand at next oil change.

Well ... As long as the bottle has the API label, mixing will not be an issue. API labeled bottles are required to be compatible. Ideal? Maybe not. Now I wouldn't be mixing a 0w20 oil with a 20w50 oil

Lightbulb Quicklook on Motul 7100 15W50

On my 85K mile 2014 RT-S SE6 I have about 3K miles on the synthetic Motul 7100 15W50. Had some days in the 80s (also a day where I drove on snowy roads) but nothing in the 100s yet plus I want to ride another 1K miles before I make a more complete report.

The quicklook observation is oil pressures are generally 4psi higher (eg 54 rather than 50) than semi-synthetic BRP 5W40 and the synthetic LM/Spectro 5W40. Again the caveat is ambient temperature and engine RPM greatly affect oil pressure. Generally I won't see 54psi at less than 3,500rpm unless the engine is cold where I will see 58psi (the pressure relief setting). Currently idle is where I see the big difference, about 8psi.

Shifting operation is smoother across a wider range of conditions. Because the 1st owner (I'm the 3rd) took long 2-up trips towing a trailer, there's the possibility the clutch wear is outside the TCM trim range. After I fix the air suspension and some other things I'm going to see if the firmware can be updated or adjusted with BUDS for improved shifting operation (maybe I'm running with 2014 firmware?).

BTW I found essentially no difference between BRP and LM/Spectro in oil pressures and shifting operation around the 2-3K mile range (I've changed oil and both filters three times in 8K miles). YMMV.

Please visit my https://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/...tul-7100-15W50 thread for the entire exciting story.

Cool Wait for it ... My experience with Motul

Pegasus -- I asked Peter to put my post in a temporary location until I create a "My experience with Motul" thread. I had mistakenly created the post in the "Which way... filter" thread when I parenthetically mentioned my use of Motul, GFrog cited his use, I expanded on my use, UtahPete correctly pointed out I was of bounds for the thread, and Peter patched things up.

In my forthcoming "My experience with Motul" I'll be describing my experience not advocating a position.
