    Default Tire Options

Does anybody have any knowledge/experience with rear tires, I am burning thru them like crazy, how many miles should you be getting from rear tire...

Do they make other tires that are better than the ones you buy from the dealership....I think I have less then 5K miles on rear tire and it is gone

Do a search and you'll find an endless amount of opinions on this subject. The stock tire is too soft and eggs out toward the center at high speeds (regardless of pressure) causing premature wear. There are several car tire options out there. Toyo Proxes, Kumho and Falken. The car tires are smoother and give better wear. There are some available is exact same size, if you change sizes check that the diameter is close. There's almost no one who has switched to a car tire that is disappointed. Some (that haven't), argue that OEM is best. IMO, the main reason the Kendra is used is financial.
I have a Toyo on the rear of mine and just last week, I swapped out the fronts to General Altima in a larger size 185/60R14. Huge difference in grip and smoothness. I'll never go back.

What flybuddy said is correct. Lots of options. A search will get you a lot of opinions and some good info.
Here is a helpful bit of info.

I'm going to be replacing my front tires with Kumho Solus KR21. They seem to be a popular brand. When I change out the rear tire (again) I'll go for a Kumho also.

    Default Just switched rear tire

Just replaced my rear with the toyo yesterday. What a difference. Ride was smoother and cornering was definitely better.

Nudel: I'm getting exc wear on the Pirelli P4. Over 10K and lots or tread left. I'm guessing at least 15K or more.

OEM was good for 10K, General Altimax would have gone more tho I changed it at 10K also.

I can't even get 1000 miles out of Kenda's on my "other" trike (see pic) and I'm the motor on it! When my stock tires are shot on my Spyder it will be a Kumho on the rear for sure, even ran that tire on my Goldwing. (darkside rider)

    Default Tire Options

For the rear, Khumo, Toyo or Falken. In front, Bridgestone Potenza RE92 for standard size or choose 175/65-R14 size.

Thumbs up You have MANY MANY Options..... and Most are Better than OEM

We have these all around (different size of course for the rear) and switched the size in front a bit larger and they fill the fenders out nicely. The larger size fronts also made our Speedo spot on to match our GPS, as most Spyders are actually a mile or two over indicated on the Speedo.
We did this a bit over 20 thousand miles ago, and they are still look'n new

These pics are when they were put on new when we had 22 thousand miles on Teds Red Sled

And this pic was taken a couple of days ago, & we're now sitting right under 44 thousand Miles of Smiles
and the rear is looking just as good

I usually get 13K to 15K out of a rear tire on the . My dealer will not install aftermarket tires so I am locked into the OEM's. My experience with OEM's covers 6 rear tires now. 5K on a rear tire seems a bit low for me--unless you are somewhat of an agressive driver.

He didn't say what model Spyder he was driving?

I have the Brigstone Potenza's on the front and am happy with them. One of my orginal tires had a high spot so I changed them out and got rid of the Elvis Syndrome after 15 months!

I have over 18K miles on the orginal rear tire. I'm going with a Kendra soon when I get my Spyder back.
There very few rear tires in the size needed for our Spyders available.

What is the widest rear Kumho Tire that I can have installed and how difficult is it to take tire off of spyder and bring down to have mounted and then re-install...

Any special tools needed, any special tips or tricks to changing tire out....

Actually I'm finding the opposite in that case, I have found quite a few for the rear and only 1 for the front in the 15 inch and that is a Federal tire. I can not find anything else to match that factory size of 165/55-15. I have my own tire changing equipment here in the shop and the metric "peel-n-stick" weights coming in soon then I will be able to mount and balance Spyder tires. I don't think my dealer would mount anything that is not factory cause I had that problem when trying to put a car tire on the rear of a Goldwing.

I can easily get 10,000 on an OEM. In the end it depends on your driving habits, hard surface condition of the roads, air pressure, etc.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
