Default Got the good deal on my 2013 ST LTD!

This is my very first bike since I had a scooter at 15! Two friends with a BMW and a Yamaha have been after me for years to get a motorcycle. At 69 I wasn't up for going back to the classroom for a motorcycle license, which costs over 2000 Euro here in Bavaria. So they put me on to Can-Am. I was lucky that we have a local dealer (there are very few here in Germany). He had a beautiful pearl white ST LTD sitting there and had just put the price down 3000 Euro on a special deal from Can-Am! I fell in love immediately with the bike/trike, and came back the next day and bought it off the floor. It is now sitting in my garage waiting for 1 March to roll around, as I have a seasonal registration which runs until 31 October. The ST L has it all, and I'm adding some of Pete's PowerSportWraps, a mono rear seat cover, shortee antennae, dash/windschield pouch, nice mesh-metal covers for the intakes, from Lamonster his spider decals and an IPS, and have purchased a beautiful glossy white Schuberth C3 helmet with their SRC Bluetooth system so I can hear my Garmin 660 give me voice directions. Already have the US and Bavarian flags on the helmet and will add them to my ST L too. I going to my first SpyderRidersDay meeting in the Altmuehltal, about a 2-hour drive from home, from 7-8 June and really looking forward to meeting other Spyder riders. Another Bavarian dealer is putting me in contact with a retired Marine who drives an RT too. Off this weekend to the big show in Munich, the IMOT. Hope to see some Can-Am folks there and meet some new friends. I may just buy a helmetCAM so I can record some of my tours around Bavaria and Thuringen. Next year I'm planning a two-week tour of Ireland with my Yamaha buddy. Will share my pic with ya'll down the road!
    Best from Bavaria! Rick/Bavarianami

I purchased a used Spyder and had an issue with it. Brought it to a dealer and they fixed. Actually had the problem diagnosed on this forum (this forum is AWESOME for that) and told the mechanic what he thought it was.

The thing that everyone has said is true. The people that have had issues will come on the board and discuss their issues here. The money that can be spent on these vehicles is HUGE and getting one that does not work properly can be a real disappointment. But you must look at it this way - the Spyder is a machine and machines eventually break down, or need preventative maintenance to keep them going without a breakdown. Manufacturers are always trying to improve their products - and this is what BRP is trying to do with their Spyders.

If you are not willing to take a chance on buying a Spyder - you need to stay away from a dealer that will offer you a ryde, cause if you ryde one, you will be HOOKED. Cause it happened to me and my wife said yes to the used Spyder.

If you do not want a Spyder, try looking at the Honda Reversed Wing Trike or TricWing.com.

You may like that, and Honda has a go rep.

    Good luck

    Default Really

Well lets see what comes next, if everyone bases there decision on only a little negative press what would we have.

I don't have a ST but love my RSS, and so far problem free, except the problem of the rear tire spinning a little too easy

14's maybe nice but no green so no deal.

I love my 2013 ST but I understand totally where you're coming from. I've had a few problems and even have an open case on the heat but nothing like you've experienced. I think you got a real lemon.

I owned a Spyder from 2009 until last October - 1st was an RS SM5, which was fun, but never close to comfortable (for me). 2nd was an RT S SE5, which was reliable as a brick, but expensive to maintain, and too far from a decent dealer for my needs. Both bikes suffered from the early DPS issues, and both were fixed by BRP. Combined, I put over 20,000 miles on these bikes, and was never left stranded - something one of my Valks actually did (an electrical failure).

I have owned a lot of different bikes, and I would rate the Spyder in the upper 40% of all of them. It is not the most comfortable road bike I've owned - that honor goes to the K1200LT. However, it is the BEST bike in traffic, decent on the RARE occasions I was forced to ride in the rain (both the Goldwing and K12 kept me drier, but the Spyder was safer - more stable), stable on gravel (but easily sucks rocks into the belt - even with the rock guard installed), and more acceptable to my SO for rides....

I believe my experiences mirror that of many others. You can always find the niggly bits with any toy - (IE: the K12 was TALL and HEAVY in a parking lot environment). (Yes, toy - Like my airplane, I would never use any bike for a primary source of transportation - just me & MHO)

My reasons for "moving on" had nothing to do with problems with the Spyder - I'm an old guy, and there are still a lot of bikes I haven't ridden yet...

Since you are still here, have you decided on a '13 or '14 ST LTD? I bought my ST-S last year and have no regrets. Best ride I've ever had and no serious heat issues!!

I too have a 2013 ST-L which I have had since august. I have ridden it in rain, gravel, and some significant twisties, in +80 degree temps in traffic and no heat issues at all. Before I ride I always check my belt guard screws, tires, belt and oil level as my "safety check". I run AMSOIL in it and that likely helps with the heat. My dealer has been great, but I've only been in for the recall, first service and installation of a better sway bar and shocks that was all done at the same time. I am getting a Corbin heated seat and smuggler trunk next week. Future mods will be wiring up for my heated jacket, a bigger windscreen, a cup holder, and possibly some paint. This bike is perfect for long distance touring and some sporty fun!

I still like the looks of the ST Limited. Especially the one in black. I would really like to purchase this model with the back rest, fog lights and a Two Brothers Carbon Fiber exhaust.

Seems there are many still having problems dealing with the heat issue and other things as well.

What gets me are the stories of BRP's lack of customer satisfaction. I feel for you guy's being treated this way and given the run around.

I just can't see laying down 26K and then rolling the dice hoping you get a good one.

I'll still back off and choose to not take the chance. My hats off to the ones being put through the ordeal you're having to deal with.

And yes I know all spider owners aren't having problems. So don't flame me like before. It's a known fact that many are.

Maybe 2015 models will have all the bugs and kinks worked out. I still want one but many things need to change.

    RIDE SAFE.

I have not heard of any '14 ST's having heat issues due to the new air flow panels. Look at it this way. You can purchase a '14 ST and be assured of no serious heat issues. OR you can save thousands by buying a leftover '13 and you might get one without heat issues. If it does have serious heat issues, you can use some of the money you saved to fix them. The '14 air flow panels will fit the '13's. So what are you waiting for??

Just curious what the "other things" are? I have a 2013 ST-L, BRP installed the new 2014 Air Flow Panels for me because of heat issues. Is there something else I should be looking out for? Haven't had any other problems except the bulletin. No problems at all since the panels were installed!

I believe that there was also a re-flash of the ECMs...

Remember forums and review sites are often filled with negative comments.....Just look at Yelp, Amazon, etc....
When someone has a problem they want help or advice concerning their issues so they come here, others are here to help, that is the great thing about Spyderlovers.

That said, ryders without issues are out ryding their Spyder, the majority are not spending loads of time talking about the good times they are having, they are just out having fun.

The bike is MUCHO fun to ride. I really think most people are more upset with the company than the problems with the bike.
I wouldn't get off mine for anything even with the problems. And I havn't had the heat issue.

Default I have in the past

posted some negetive comments about my ST Limited. This was only due to the heat on the left side and the gas smell. That was all fixed by JT,s machine shop. The heat is a non issue and I only have a slight bit of gas smell when the tank is low and it is parked for a few minutes when the temps are high outside. That is when the engine heat starts to get absorbed into the gas tank. But it goes away quickly as everything cools back down. Everyday I ride this this thing I feel better about and love it even more. I have had ZERO mechanical issues after 4200 miles. Just ordered a set of Elka's for the front & rear, cant wait till they get here.

I don't understand why the OP, after deciding not to buy a Spyder, keeps coming back and complaining about people who've answered his negative posts with posts about not having any problems, or few problems, with their Spyders. He didn't buy one, which is fine...his choice...but still comes back to complain about things he, personally, has not experienced.

    What's up with that?
