Default Simple $40 X Phone Mount for RT with SE5

    The RT handlebars are BIG.

Here's how I did a pretty nice mount. Might not work if you have a clutch -- I have an SE5 so I don't know.

    Start with this:

    and these two as well:

Just about $40 -- $20 if you only want the ball and the arm and you don't want the X mount.

Then I used 4 19cm black zip ties. I had these on hand, but Big Lots (closeout kind of store) sold these to me awhile back for $2.50 for a bag of 100.

The mount is going to go right next to the left handlebar grip. Orient the ball on the handlebar and insert two zip ties in the "back" holes (closest to the windshield). Put the flat side of the zip head facing the driver and flush with the top of the mount. Now thread two more zip ties through the "front" holes with the zip heads under the mount. Insert the front ties into the back zip heads and tighten just a little bit. Now insert the back zip ties into the front zip heads and tighten so that the heads are near the bottom of the handlebar. Make sure the top stays flush. Tighten until they are pretty inconspicuous. If you mess up, the zip ties are cheap. Cut them and start again.

Now take some needlenose pliers and tighten the h*** out of the ties. If you get it tight enough it is going NOWHERE. Cut the ties flush with the head.

Then mount the arm and the X mount and the phone and you are done. Woo hoo! Seems to work although I haven't been out cruising at 70MPH yet with it. However, I did just take it out on the highway for a good 1/2 hour and it up to 60MPH. No sign of motion.

Of course, you could use the ball for anything you can use a ball for -- cup holder etc.

I don't have any long enough, but they do make stainless zip ties if you are into the chrome look, that might work too.

I bought some longer zip ties and did this again. I don't think it was quite as tight -- perhaps having two locking ears helps. I also tried putting the longer ties in an X pattern. Better, but still not as good as I think the first attempt with 2 ties was.

If you still have some wiggle it probably won't hurt, but you can use the left over zip tie ends you cut off as shims. Just work them under where the handlebar curves away and then pull them around to a tight spot and trim flush with the edges. That will significantly cut down on any residual motion.

What about using a strip of thin rubber under the mount. Something like a lid gripper cut to fit.

The clamp that is shown in the picture from Amazon, is hidden in the top of the housing. All you see after it is installed in the rubber covered strap that goes around the big bar of the SE5.
