New spare key

A while back I ordered a clonable transponder key from a vendor on the internet. The key number is ZD23RT5. It cost me $15.00 plus shipping and it looks like this.

Today I finally got around to visiting the locksmith. The transponder chip cloning took less than 30 seconds and another minute or two on the key cutting machine. I got two house keys cut at the same time and he charged me $10.00.
The new key works exactly like the original key. It starts and the Spyder does not act any differently.

This may be an option for some other folks.
It is a little cheaper then a Can-am key, but not a lot.
Avoids the hassle of getting a new key programed at the dealer.
It has a hole in the head for a key ring if you wish.

Can you give a bit of an explanation about what this "cloning" process entails?
( I don't want to stand too close to the machine! )

What was the name of the vendor that you purchased from?

I got it from here http://allmotorcyclekeys.com/. Just checked the website and it lists the key blank as out of stock. When I did a search a couple months ago there are several vendors. The key blank is identified for an Aprilla motorcycle by most vendors.

I,m not sure what you're asking? I have the two keys that came with the Spyder. I have an original stored away at home just in case I need to copy a new key. I cloned my everyday key and will keep using it. The new spare will be hidden in my Spyder in case of misfortune.

The locksmith drop my original key into a slot in a 6" X 6" electronic device and pushed a button. Took it out. Put in the cloneable key blank and pushed a button. Then mount both in a key cutting machine and cut the grooves just like a regular key.

My understanding of the technology is that machine reads the code the original key transmits and programs the cloneable blank to transmit the same code. The Spyder does not know the difference between the two keys.

sounds a LOT easier then getting a spare done by the dealer, they had to reinsert and swap out both keys I originally had because after the new one was made the old ones wouldn't work. my locksmith tried to read teh transponder and his machine didn't detect anything in it!

It's a Canadian thing, if we share it with you all of a sudden you will claim it as American Technology? In all actuality it most likely has "Made in China" written all over it?

I must be lucky. The lock and glass shop that I have used for years has the right equipment. Maybe look for a shop that advertises doing modern car keys, same equipment.
The vendor I bought the blank from has an option to clone and cut it for $10.00 but there was no way I was shipping one of my keys to Maine. It would go through customs twice and be in transit for weeks. That may be an acceptable option for you.

Now that puts it in context. Once upon a time, long, long ago (no this is not a fairy tale) I lost two sets of keys for a vehicle I had and what a pain in the butt that was. Since then I have squirreled away an original key at home.

I saw the key blank for sale; it listed it as the case. I assume that there would be no chip in one of them that is marketed in that manner...

I have been a locksmith for twenty plus years , we stopped doing auto work about 15 years ago when the transponders came out. Basically because of the software up dates . But If I thought it would be helpful I would dust of the old key machine and update the electronics bring some blanks to Spyderquest .
