Battery Tender

I'm a new RT-S owner and was told to get a battery tender. I was also told that you can hook it into the 12-v lighter in the truck with the right adapter. I need some help. If that is true can someone tell me what adapter I would need to hook my battery tender up? Also, where can I get it from? Hit the interstate today for the first time. Rode about 20 miles. congrats on the new ryde.. Not sure why you want to hook up to the truck, maybe trunk. Most folks hook leads direct to the battery. To go from the tender to the 12 v outlet on the roadster you need the lighter plug adapter. Those who know will be along...

I use one made by black and Decker on both my bike and trike. Work good enough for me and they come with everything you will need. Home Depot......20 bucks.

There are many others available and you're sure to hear about them. The choice will be yours.

Keep in mind that the fuses need to be moved on the 2013's to make the trunk power socket live at all times, a necessity for use with a charger.

I find it just as quick to just lift the seat and use the battery tender alligator clips on the battery studs.

On the 2013 Rt, the 12 V accessory outlet in the rear cargo hold can be set up to be either switched or unswitched, depending on the fuse position.

My suggestion would be to have a quick connect lead direct to battery. Its simple/quick & no leaving the seat up or trunk open thats what i did, I would also suggest a good charger thats 5 stage not just float only but then thats just me

I live off of exit 22 on I-77. I'll be glad to go riding with you. Not all the way comfortable on the interstate but I'm getting there. My work schedule is crazy (one day off during the week and Sundays).

I read somewhere on SL if you have a 2011-2012 RTS, you can just plug into the 12 volt adapter in the trunk because it is always hot. Tender with a 12 volt adapter would work, right?!?

I have a 2012 RT and have mounted my charger on the inside of the trunk right next to the power port.

I have a 2012 RT Limited and the 12 volt socket is "live" all of the time. Therefore, my battery tender works well with the cigarette lighter plug. I have now used it for a couple of weeks and works well as I have had NO problems with this. Good to keep battery in great shape! My battery tender is a dual system where it has these types of plugs on the end to hook up to various attachments. I use one for the motorcycle and one for the JD riding mower (but not a cigarette plug type of connection on the JD).

My technician installed a battery tender pig tail on the battery for my 2013 RT Limited. He tied the other end to the right wheel near the shock areas with a plastic tie. Easy to get to and charge.

wouldn't it be closer to battery if it was under the seat on the same side as the battery?
near the shock area seems like it could get dirty/wet

Not being an expert on the configuration of the components, such as the battery, he told me on the 2013, the battery was moved so it could be accessed from the frunk. So he made it the other end of the pigtail so that nothing has to be raised or accessed in order to go to the pig tail end. The pig tail end is fully protected with its own cap. I keep a battery tender on it when not riding it.

Has cigarette plug (not shown in picture ) that is always plugged in when the 2012 RT limited is not in use.

They moved the battery on the 2013s to down low behind the frunk. you cant see anything under the seat anymore.

I just found that my new 2013 RT S has the battery tender wires already installed on the battery, in the fruck. I'm not sure if my dealer did this or is standard on 2013's. I just needed to insert the plug thru a rubber plug into the fruck from the battery.

After reading this post, I was going to use the power outlet in the truck (after I switched fuses to make the outlet live) but found I don't have to do that. I'll be opening the fruck and plugging into the installed tender plug wires.

I was just gonna say I believe all 2012 and 2013 spyders come with the battery tender leads already installed. I know mine did. After every ride that is the first thing I do is lift the seat and plug her it. All those electrical goodies don't like to go hungry!
