Greasin' the Belt

My RT belt started squeaking a little on acceleration in lower gears at a couple thousand miles & the tech a Cowtown told me he put a little grease on it. Worked pretty good, but now about 5 or 6 thousand later it is squealing like a stuck pig. The service bulletin posted at http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/s...7-squeal-noise
says to dab on some XPS Synthetic Grease (little bitty dabs, less than that Brylcreem dab, Bob. Of course, Bob probably doesn't have as much hair as he had in the '50s, so he doesn't need as big a dab of Brylcreem either! Just enough to make his scalp shine!).

I found a MSDS for it which says it is a "semi-synthetic lithium complex grease."

I don't have any and don't want to drive 140 miles to pay probably $20 for a tube to use a few dabs from. Would it be OK to use my Mystic JT-6 Hi-Temp No 2 EP Lithium Complex grease? I see that Mystic also makes a semi-synthetic, so maybe I should try to find that one locally?

Or would Brylcreem work? I heard Bob uses it to polish his Spyder.

Glad this topic came up! It reminded me of something I was told a while ago, but forgot to run it across the experts...
I was talking with a guy who rode belt driven motorcycles for years, and he suggested running a crayon over the belt to stop the squeaking... It kind of made sense...

Does the Mystic say that it is synthetic? You don't want to use a dyno grease or a semi-synthetic. The XPS is a waterproof synthetic, as I recall.

Agree with Scotty and Bob, no dino grease. Full synth only. And no belt dressing junk either. That's as bad as or worse than dino grease. Mine was squeeling too and the tech took care of it.

My 09GS did that some in the Hot, Humid air-I used Synthetic Waterproof Green Tube Grease BUT just the 2 small dabs on the belt equal distant from one another and it helped. Same stuff in the Sea Doo and trailer bearings.

Too much grease will pick up dirt and will hurt belt.

If XPS is semi-synthetic, then another semi-synthetic wterproof grease should do fine. By "dyno" or "dino" I was referring to dinosaurs...or petrolium based lubricants. Petroleum products and rubber do not generally play well together. I'd learn to live with the noise before I used a product that I wasn't pretty sure of. Belts cost several hundred dollars.

High Temperature, waterproof high Pressure Lithium grease is pretty inert. I use it on just about anything that moves or slides (though the wife complains). It's cheap and effective just don't use too much. Costs about $5 for a large tube the size of a whipped butter tube.

The grease is pretty hard to remove so use it sparingly! No comment on the other question don't want to be pushing it and get kicked off the forum!!

I got a tube of Valvoline Synthetic grease, put on a few pea-sized dabs, & it is quiet as new. Now instead of feathering the throttle in public (such an embarassing noise it made), I can goose it a little bit.

For $6 I got enough grease for about a thousand treatments. If your belt squeals, send me your address & I'll send you a few dabs! Seriously!
