Towed mine backwards because it would scrape the nose if loaded opposite, and I didn't have enough ramp material to load it front to back properly without scraping. The tie down method through the wheels is one of the two described in the owners manual. The major hazard with it loaded backwards is damage to the windshield as it's not designed to have the wind force applied in the opposite direction so you will have lower it completely and keep your speed down. My snowmobiling friends gave me the heads up on that one, seems it happens to them often as they shoehorn several on a trailer. With multiple bikes, one will usually be reversed or sideways. My trailer is a 18' car hauler and it was centered left to right so there is room for 2 in a staggered arrangement. The major hazard I had was from people driving along side the trailer pointing and taking pictures. Good luck and drive safe!.

Nose to tail is the only way to go. Trying to cram them in a small width enclosed trailer would be irritating. Place the heaviest Bike on the tongue. Weight distribution is key when using a single axle trailer, a tandem axle would be superb just for the fact that you could limp along, heaven forbid you had a flat. As mentioned ground clearance at the breakpoint of the ramp is key.
Looking for help would like to put both in a trailer for a trip out west, cannot figure out size of needed trailer. Any thoughts, help would be appreciated

I use a 7 X 19 enclosed aluminum trailer. It is a 16 foot box with 3 feet in the V. I back my RT so the butt is in the V and can fit 2 full dress bikes to the rear of the trailer. It's cozy to get things tied down for an old fat guy but I take my toys between Wisconsin and Kentucky every year.
