    Default "Phantom" Limp Mode

Running down the highway about 75 yesterday, my wife's 08 SM5 started scrolling "check engine and limp mode" across the screen. The bike didn't go into limp mode and was running fine. We pulled over, removed the key, put the key back in, turned it 5 times and the message was gone. No more problems the 140 miles to home. Any thoughts?

The first thing to check is that the relays are seated properly. My 08 needed new foam in the top of the box to keep them seated properly. The next thing would be battery condition and the condition of the connections to it.

    Question

Don't have an answer to your question. Do have another question. Thought I had read that turning the ignition on and off numerous times in succession could cause a problem all its own?

Glad it didn't go into limp mode. That's a big - whew!

    Did it throw any codes?

    How to check for codes.

Lay your left thumb across both the "Mode" and "Set" Buttons, while holding them down,
    push your turnsignal button in.

The main screen should bring up codes.

Write them down, then hit "Mode" one last time to get back to the home screen.

That procedure only works for the RT. The RS uses a different procedure.

Looks like my attempt to help was misleading. My apologies.

No problem. I know how to check the codes, just haven't done it, yet. I know I am pushiing the limits of the battery. It is the original, so 5 years is pretty good.

The Spyder battery is an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery, not a gel-cell battery.

What is the RS procedure? I don't remember reading it in my shop manual.

I believe this is the way. It's been a while. I think this is for active codes only.
    1. turn on key
    2. switch mode to engine hours
    3. turn on start switch
    4. hold the mode button
    5. flash hi beams 5 times in 2 seconds
