So, in summary, some of us carry and some of us don't. Some of us agree and some of us don't. Bottom line, to each his own and respect opinions.

With such a long thread I’m too lazy to go back and quote the original sources directly, so please forgive the paraphrasing!
One poster stated that he would not run if confronted by a bad guy. I’ve been fortunate enough to train with some of the leading international self-defense and hand-to-hand combat instructors in the world and they have drilled into our heads to “use the Nike defense.” If there is an opportunity to escape, or defend yourself and then quickly escape, take it. I’m confident in my ability to defend myself after 14+ years of training but I would gladly run or hand over my wallet/spyder keys, etc. instead of getting into a combat situation with someone who may have nothing to lose—or has friends with him (out of view) carrying weapons. I’ve spoken with my family about what to do if we are held up or carjacked so that we have a clear plan of action. I don’t walk around expecting or fearing violence, but I am aware and prepared.
One poster cited Lt. Co. Grossman and his analogy about sheeps and wolves. Grossman has done some cutting-edge research on violence, and he is a good man to boot. It is worth reading his book ‘On Combat” to see what is being learned about violent video games/movies and the brains of young people. It is also worth noting who wrote the intro to this book—Gavin de Becker (‘The Gift of Fear’). de Becker and his organization work to prevent the most violent criminals from achieving their goals, and his perspective on carrying guns might surprise some of you.
Many of the violent examples in this thread focus on horrific stranger assaults—these are certainly real and frightening. However, in this country, people are far more likely to be assaulted or killed with a gun by someone they know. This, unfortunately, is a fact. One of friends and colleagues was sadly shot and killed by her husband last year--per usual, he then turned the gun on himself. We see these stories almost nightly on the news. In my line of research (sexual assault prevention), the survivor knows the perp. 85-90% of the time yet stranger assaults take the headlines because they tend to be more dramatic.

MDR...you have my sympathies concerning your colleague, however do you believe she would not have died at the hands of her husband if he did not have a gun ??? Her death was going to occur he just choose a gun to do it with.....Maybe that was merciful....?.....Mike

. I also have worked quite a lot down in Texas for a large oilfield company and man those guys down there love their guns. One guy because he really hated snakes the kind that can bite and kill you in seconds.
Uh, hate to tell you this but there aren't any such snakes here in the good ole USA.

TOTALLY TRUE
I live in Vermont (and love it) and I believe it is the MOST liberal State in the Union.....would you believe there are practically no CARRY rules/regs/or laws concerning concealed firearms......Some of the larger cities tried to pass local ordinances against this ..But our good ole LIBERAL STATE SUPREME Court shot ( pun intended) that down real quick.......Just a bit of useful / or not trivia.......Mike.....And for you non-firearms types this is legal to carry at all times SPRAY OVEN CLEANER Have you ever seen what that stuff will do to the crud in the oven that you can't get off with a HAMMER & CHISEL....I would only use it in an extreme emergency because it's effect is almost as perminant as a bullet.....BE CAREFUL OUT THERE..

Oh boy....I ain't gonna get involved in this discussion save for two points...
1. Fast and Furious
2. UN Small Arms Treaty...
I think it's great when we can champion ALL the Amendments, not just pick and choose amongst them...

Amendments ???
This post went off the track a long time ago. I'm pretty sure it has been in violation of Lamont's
FIRST AMENDMENT for some time now. But hey, it's none of my business. Right.

As previously stated... the 'law' has exemptions.... so it's really not the law that everyone must own a gun if anyone can be exempt from it.
Those who are exempted wouldn't know what to do with a gun anyway....it's just those of us who are realists who need guns.....

Interesting point to this thread, despite the spirited nature of the debate the discourse has remained civil and respectful (well almost, I think Firefly may have received one or two shots below the belt, but for 9 pages of thread, not bad) and it occurs to me that it's because we're here for something else we have in common, obviously loving Spyders. The sad part is I remember when the fact that we were all Americans, was cause enough for respect in debate, guess I'm just old.

The swiss are mandated to join the military once they turn 18, and serve for their country. They are then told to have a gun until they are at least 30.
I enjoy guns, and will teach my children how to use them when they are old enough. I read a story of an 11 yr old girl killing 2 home invaders with a shotgun. She was a skeet shooting champ since she was 9 an knew how to handle, and what power they were capable of producing. If everyone was educated on guns, I feel as if more people would own them and not be afraid of them. The "gun issue" is just like politics, abortion, religion... people have their own opinion and wont be changed very easy. I don't convice people they NEED guns, but I offer to help them, and get over a fear of them.
