I plan on picking up the new HCM filter and cover the next time I pass by the dealer. In the meantime I will use up my stock of old filters.
Did they mention any kind of price change?
Just curious.

With a 2012, it should be standard now, right? Last time I changed it, it does look like the 35mm cap for the HCM.

I don't think that there has been a noticeable price hike. The new filter price sounded vaguely familiar to what I paid for the filters I bought late last year.

My dealer says:
"They will be superceding the old numbers to the new ones so the new style will be the only ones we will be stocking."

Thanks for the update Lamonster. The HMC larger filter is a good idea. With a good full synthetic oil, are they really needed? When I use up my supply of filters that I got from BajaRon, I hope he will have the new HMC filters in stock. That's IMHO.

The price?

Is this just for the 2012-11 Spyders or can we also use this filter and schedule for our older Spyders?

Ha! Wouldn't you know it. I had my 3,000 mile service last Friday. I looked on the invoice and old part numbers. Oh, well.

One thing for sure is the new filters have steel reinforcement.

Was at the dealer today to get the break pin installed, they didn't mention this but then again they didn't know about the pin recall either. Thanks for the heads up Lamont.

New Filter Notification
Thanks for the info. How or where does a person find out this info? Does BRP send it out to everyone?

There is a new Maintenance Schedule that was just released for all Spyders that change the valve inspection time from 10,000 miles to 14,000 miles.
The old spec was first at 6K miles and then every 12k thereafter (or 10,000km and 20,000km respectively). Not sure where you're coming from on the 10K and 14k mile numbers. Can you clarify? Thanks.

You are correct, got my miles and K's mixed up.
Adjustment intervals can be increased to 22,500 km (14,000 mi) and eliminate the inspection at 10,000 km (6,000 mi).

I didnt even know dealers sold filters
There are 3 possibilities...
1- It doesn't make that much difference (not likely)
2- It makes a big difference but I am able to sell my current stock (maybe)
3- I have a lifetime supply of filters I can use (engine) and many that I can't (trans)
I wonder if the Aprilia motorcycles that have been using the same engine filters since before the Spyder was built (Same engine - Same filter - SM5) is also changing to these new filters, or is it just our Spyder.
The Aprilia ran several years with an even smaller engine filter than what our Spyders use (the older ones still do) and they develop about 50 more HP than our Spyder with the same motor.
I think the larger transmission filter is a good move, but my feeling is the engine filter is not going to be a real world improvement. I will continue to run them in my Spyder.

Just put my last oil filter on..... Will continue using Ron's filters for the foreseeable future. I run my engine pretty hard...so I'm sticking by the 3,000 mile rule.....about every 3 weeks for the next few months.

Spyder #1 - 2008 GS SM5 Premier Edition #1977. RIP after 80,000 miles.
Spyder #2 - 2012 RT SM5. Traded in after 24,000 miles.
Spyder #3 - 2015 F3 SM6. Put 13,000 miles on and sold it.
Spyder #4 - 2017 F3 SM6. Too good of a deal to pass up!

Sure Glad I have a lever instead of a paddle
So now you'll need to add a thimblefull more oil to compensate for the 13mm more capacity. Amazing how the engineer developed this calculation from less than a 1/2 cup more oil to over 1600 miles. Guess they got bored trying to figure out an easier way to put air in the rear tire..

13mm is a length and not the surface area that has been increased. Larger surface area = larger filtration surface = longer lifespan.

BRP needs to put "spin on" oil filters on Spyder motors
Why doesn't BRP put "spin on" oil filters on engines in Spyder's? Every modern motorcycle engine has "spin on" oil filters that are very easy to change!!! BRP could offer a kit to convert to spin on oil filters. Jim

1"x3"=1/2 cup more oil...someone asked about additional capacity. I have the SM5, so not really sure how much fluid to fill the SE5 Tranny.

planned obsolesence
so is this new schedule really just to sell more bikes? don't know if I'd feel comfortable running blend, in Texas heat, after break in full synthetic would offer adequate protection.

As far as I know, no one has had any issues with these HiFlo filters. The HiFlo transmission filter flows more oil than the OEM filter (though it won't flow as much as the new larger filter).
If BRP had not come out with new filters everyone would still be fat and happy with the current products.
It will be interesting to see if anyone sees an improvement with the larger transmission filter.

You better buy at least one filter from your dealer before may of 2013 to get that free cover, because after May 2013 I guessing it will be a $150.00 part.
