Default HELP!!! NEED Immediate Feedback Please

Help!!!! My husband just drained the oil out of my Spyder RTS and put new oil back in - it was kind of an accident... anyway - he did not put on a new oil filter because I am having a complete oil change next week... he was trying to just add some new oil, but the old ran out accidentally... you know that makes a huge mess!!! Anyway - once he put the new oil in the dash control lights went crazy.... we are not sure if we need to keep it on for a period of time till they stop flashing or is this is a really big boo boo...

    Can anyone help us? Linda

Not enough information. Which lights, which messages? I'm not sure how he drained the oil when he was just adding some, but he was in way deeper than was appropriate. Was anything else changed, worked on, moved, removed, or damaged in the process?

Default More INFO on the PROBLEM

    HI - HUSBAND HERE.
I drained a little oil at first because 1) it was foaming and 2) it smelled burned. This weekend there was a lot of idling and stops & starts.
The oil came out when the plug dropped out. I put in TWO quarts, then turned on the key to move the Spyder to begin clean up. Every ICON on the Screen was flashing and there was a clicking sound like a loud turn signal. I shut it down and tried a couple more times. Shut down again. I went to the store to get an additional Two quarts of oil, thinking that the Spyder was smarter than me and would not allow a start up with too little oil. After putting in the additional two quarts. The same problem persisted. When the key was turned to ON....every ICON flashed, the speedo went to max and the gasoline gague fluttered accompained by clicking. IS IT A FUSE??? The only things I touched were the drain plug, the oil fill plug, and the Key, of course.

Sounds like the battery needs a charge.

    Default JUST TRIED AGAIN

I just went out and checked the flashers....they went ON and OFF with the push of the right hand control.
When the ignition key was in the OFF position, I got the LIMP MODE message on the screen AND I could go through the screens and got mileage info, the fact that the Spyder was in neutral, stereo balance etc. When I put the key to ON (right next to ignition) all the flashing started again.
That's still the problem. LIMP MODE is the only new screen that came on....and that was with the key 'straight up' in the OFF position.

    Does it just click?
If so it's your battery. Could be a loose connection but I would start there first.

    Default Battery?

It does not appear to be the battery. The clicking is NOT when we push the ignition switch to start it. That type of clicking is classic for being the battery, I agree. I've had cars do that all my life. This is the INFORMATION SCREEN which is going hyper, flashing Icons and the clicking is secondary. We disconnected the battery and all is silent. We are hoping this will reset the ECU. I've been told this takes around an hour...sometimes more. Am I on the right track? OR....if we assume it's not the battery...is the ECU reset a good next step.

Also check the main relay in the front fuse box. If you have a multi-meter, check the battery voltage. You can also check active fault codes by turning the key on, the pressing "Mode", "Set", and the turn signal cancel simultaneously. I have heard of the check engine light flashing, but not all the rest. Having the speedo stick at the top is odd, too.

Mine did all of that and some more last Tuesday on the screens and then the LCD just went blank. My dealer sent two technicians with the computer and a starter battery. Ultimately they found a loose connection on the battery, a blown 5 amp fuse, and a shorted wire in the harness before they could get it to start and had a number of other faults pop up. Managed to get it on the trailer and back to the dealership and when all was said and ended up having to replace the throttle body by the time they got done with codes popping up.

Kinda strange that everything was working fine until you had the oil change issue? Check over everything you touched, may be related. Im curious as to how all the oil came out of the fill plug? If all else fails have your dealer get it on b.u.d.s. and have them do a starter operation test per the book.

Default Thanks to All who Helped us

Thanks so much for your information. Tom was able to find a code Po500 (VSS) - The Spyder was completely locked down, So getting her on the tow trailer was quite something. Anyway - you guys were a big help - THANKS

PS - I had just spent the weekend riding in the hills of southern Ohio with about 40 other Spyders... I get home, back into the garage and turn it off. Husband goes out to take it to the car wash for me... tires were a bit muddy... dirty... and my Spyder was down for the count!!! I guess I am blessed that it happened in my own garage and not going down a back road someplace...
