Many rear turn signals are amber but there are also many red, so I suspect it does not really matter.
But we are in NYS and everything is regulated and has been legislated on, including the time for bathroom breaks, so red may very well be required here. I'll be shocked if it is not, actually additional non state approved, certified and licensed ($) indicators may be illegal.

Well I thought I was done with mods for a while but this one is so inexpensive and easy I told my wife that I "had to do it". For safety of course. The fact that it looks great is irrelevant…!

Any ideas to make them brighter? Higher wattage bulbs? Are they easy to access?
with the large dash panel they sure could have made the digital display larger and the clock ,temp, trip meter etc. larger then 10 point font...LOL
and the indicator lights bigger or brighter

I thought I posted this...............
I thought I posted these pictures, maybe it was a different thread, or maybe I just never pressed Submit after I did a preview of the post ?
Any way, it was less than $15.00 and I wired the LED into the mirror harness in the mirror side of the connectors. I did not have to disassemble the mirrors to snake the wires through so I did not have to worry about breaking any locking tabs.
If it ain't broke, don't break it.

Word of caution. I have not looked into this, and have no idea if this will void my warranty or not so I will be checking around first.
That said, our new 2011 Cluster the used to replace our bad 2010 cluster, is half the brightness of the 2010. So in all angles of the sun during the day I cannot tell if my blinkers are on or not. Very frustrating.......

I got fed up of peering at those standard little dark green lights in the cluster, I needed something I could SEE instantly and in daylight. A new pair of bright LED's did the job. I chose amber.

GeoffCee: I like your installation and thats what I'd like also.
Can you elaborate on the wiring?
-
Here in TX they can be amber if they are TS only. If they are on and rear facing at any other time they need to be red.
Seems easy to tap the existing wiring/ signals and get better visibility.

Sure can. This photo should explain things. I used Positaps to connect into the existing blinker wiring.

The mirror "hangs" on the top pin and the bottom two connections are "push in" type connectors. Sooo the pop off and the wiring is there for the turn signals.

MY fix for dull directional indicator lights
Here's the way I took care of the dull dash indicator problem. These show up great in full sun too. Takes about 20 min. to install.
Here's where to get them.

Reggy at TricLED is in the process of offering a small string of amber LED's that stick to the mirror and act as rear facing turn signals. I saw this in person at SpyderFest 2012. It looks awesome. Since I have my fender and mud flap lights tied into my turn signals, I can clearly see when they are on or off. You'll have to pop off the mirrors to get to the signal hot wires. That's easy enough to do if it's not winter.

I have 8" amber strips mounted to the bottom edge of my mirrors. I drilled a small hole through the case at the end of the strip and fished the wires through the mirror body and tied into the turn signal wires. Not only do I have a good indicator of the turn signal status but they can be seen by people beside me.
A cheap and easy to complete mod, IMHO

I see where you drilled the hole in the housing on the miiror side; does that drop the wires down into the "guts" of the housing where they can be pulled out and hooked into the turnsignal wiring? Do you need to split the housing apart for this?

If I remember correctly, the wire needed routed thru two pieces of plastic, drill two holes. That is why I decided to dismantle the lights completely so I could make it a clean install with all the connections (positaps) cleanly hidden. This allows the mirrors to be removed as original with the OEM plug.

It is right at the inside edge of the strip ...

Use a small, stiff wire to fish the leads out of the mirror body. You can use a 9 Vdc battery to check the polarity of the strip. I used Pos-i-taps to connect into the mirror harness, then stuck them into the holes on the bike.
