Undoubtedly contributed by one of your countrymen. Interestingly, the Stuart Hwy which runs south from Darwin to Alice Springs then Port Auguata has echos of Route 66. The northern railhead was at Alice Springs and just a dirt road north to Darwin. A single lane bitument road 900 miles long was constructed during WW2 after Pearl Harbour when the Japanese military threatened and later bombed Darwin and other parts of the northern coastal areas. Many of your US servicemen were involved it getting it built in record time so that wartime supplies could get from Alice north in good time.
