    Default Erie Canal

I understand that a section of the old Erie Canal has been turned into a State Park; has anybody checked this out? I'm beginning plans for a trip to the Watertown / Alexandria Bay area and would like info.
    Thanks,

    john

I have an old mule and her name is Sal. 15 years on the Erie Canal. She knows every inch of the way from Albany to Buffalo.
    You should check with her

I live about 1000 yards from the Erie Canal. The canal is only 20 feet wide in my area so my guess would be that if there was a state park on the canal it's not that big.

There is a park on the canal near me where you can go and picnic, but don't waste your time going there. Not much to look at.

Watertown and Alexardria Bay is nowhere near the Erie Canal anyway. That is near Canada. Are you sure your talking about the Erie Canal ???

Yup, stationed at Drum for 4 years, been around 48 years since, going to be looking up friends and enemies that have calmed down some, I hope.
I explored a lot of the Black River Canal when I was there, at least what was left of it.

The Erie Canal village is part of this. It's outside of Rome. They have a packet boat ride there (drawn by mules, if I remember right) and the people that work there are dressed in clothes of the 1800's.

I think the Erie Canal Village is still open. If it's not and you are interested in gambling, you can always pay a visit to the Turning Stone Casino. I know that's open

I'm originally from Rome. I don't know if this is what you were looking for.

Portions of the Erie Canal run along side RT 12 going from Utica to Watertown. There are several segments that have been restored, one that just south of Boonville on the way to Lowville. I grew up in this area and spent a lot of time playing in the canal structures.
