Default Palmer, Alaska - more flying and family...

Cousin was set to change the oil in his plane. First thing you have to do is hot up the engine.

    View of the Knik Glacier.

Glacial run-off. The blue color comes from the glacier grinding the rock into powder. Kinda like talcum powder, then mix with the melt water.

Got to help change the oil. It was great to be back working on a plane!

Afterwards, the family had a fish BBQ.

Slabs of halibut and salmon from the fish camp getting ready for the grill.

    Blackened to perfection!

There's nothing better than a good BBQ with family and friends.

I am guessing there is a lot of fish--because the fish are very big here. And yes, fresh halibut and salmon are really, really, good. You get a lot of filets off of a 30# + salmon or 50# halibut. Very common sizes. Salmon can run over 50# (i've caught one like that), I had to tackle it when I got it ashore (river fishing on the Kenai)--no net. Halibut can run over 300#--there are a few like that caught every year.

It was good meeting you at Cowtown and Spyderfest!

My wife and I had planed on a trip to Alaska and Canada (cruise, train, bus). Due to my kidney failure and surgery we had to postpone the trip until next year. Keep up the great photos and narrative, I’m living out my 30th anniversary trip through you two.

Oh man... you should have smelled the BBQ! Didn't smell fishy at all. Think its because its fresh fish.

Used to think everythings bigger in Texas. Not so. Everything is bigger in Alaska. From the mountains to the fish!

The BBQer knew what he was doing. Just the right seasoning and the fish was tender and juicy. Yummmm!

We've had some great memories. In the middle of the ride though, its hard to figure out which is the best.

The one thing that makes this road trip stand out is being able to share it with our friends.

    Default Palmer to Fairbanks, Alaska

Took a bit longer to get Spydee out of the shop than we thought. So we left at 1:00 instead on 9:00 for the around 300 mile trip to Fairbanks.

Hurricane Gulch. 500 foot drop. Felt kinda queazy standing for the picture.

Alaskan tundra. The vegetation doesn't grow very high because the permafrost is so close to the surface.

Denali National Forest. Didn't get to ride through it, but now we have a reason to come back.

Got to the hotel around 9:30 and there was still good daylight. Went to bed at midnight and there was still good daylight...

    Default Fairbanks, Alaska.

The further north we go, the better the weather gets. Yee Ha! No more electric underwear!!

SethO, think you have stiff compition for the dirtiest Spyder!
Spydee got a wash in Palmer. A one day mosquito collection.

We're holed up in a hotel by a Denny's. Very happy camper! It also has a claim to fame...

Hubby's BMW is in the shop longer than we thought, so we will be exploring Fairbanks and surrounding areas tomorrow.

We planned on putzing through Denali but time was an issue. Was hoping to get my Scavenger Hunt picture of a wild animal there. When towns are far and few between, sometimes you have to put it off till next year.

Enjoy the heat. Fairbanks and the interior area are usually the warmest in AK. Can reach high 80's in the summer. As you go North though?---You are now 150 miles or so from the Arctic Circle.

Great pictures--you are capturing AK for all the readers.

Perhaps you will get lucky and see another wild animal somewhere on the journey. At least with the Spyder you have the ability to try to get away quickly if something goes wrong.

RE: the mosquitos--the locals refer to them as B-52's. They are big--but they are not fast--smuck! In the Anchorage/Eagle River area, they come in early May and the majority seem to be gone by the end of June. That is just fine with me. Not so, North and in the interior. I have heard the insects try to eat you alive in the tundra areas.
