Default I'm 100% Legal! (Maybe a bad choice of words)

    Good news to share...

This past Saturday I drove the RS-S about an hour north to Bellingham where my skills or driving test for the trike/sidecar endorsement was scheduled at 10:30AM. A friend decided to also ride (on two wheels) at the last minute and my wife followed in the truck as moral support. We arrived early so that I could walk and drive the course (remote from the DOL office) for a lap or two before the appointed time. I had asked permission to do this earlier in the week, and after a long pause on the other end of the phone was told that if I were to arrive early, none of the staff would be on site... I chuckled a little bit at this and so did the examiner I was talking to.

The test went very well despite the wet conditions and the toughest part was to trying to relax and not over think the situation. The Spyder simplified the job greatly with its symmetrical design, wide wheels up front where they are easy to see, and ABS brakes provided hard stops without skidding tires.

Thanks to all of you new friends for advice and support, I'm very happy to say that I passed the skills test and am now legal to drive at any hour of the day and to carry passengers!

Thanks Neez... driving the course ahead of time made a big difference for me.

Now it's time to ride as much as weather allows and get my back into the best shape I can for longer rides! Jo is looking forward to riding together and being a passenger for something new. Maybe by next spring we can be a little more involved with the local group.

    Congratulations!

I took the Motorcycle Safety Foundation class at the local H-D dealer and once I passed the written and ridden exam, I got a certificate which I take to the DMV /DPS office and all I had to do was take the eye test and pay for the endorsement.

Thanks for all the well wishes guys...

I continue to be surprised at how much response there is for sharing something as small as this test, and how warm the response is from this group. You guys are all right, that's for sure.

For those who asked if I, or my wife and I, will be heading to SpyderFest or other distance destinations this year, it's too early for me to tell. I'd really like to but it all comes down to how my back gets used to riding and how long a ride it will put up with at a stretch. In the early 1990's I had a rather severe lower back injury which also caused severe left leg nerve damage. There has been surgery and a lot of history since that time. You might say that these things heavily flavor what I do and don't do and it goes through phases of change from time to time. I'm told that the work load typically shifts up the spine to compensate for the injury and this can cause accelerated wear of the disks and vertebrae in the area immediately above and there have some signs that this may be happening.

Because it does not need to be balanced, the Spyder makes riding possible again for me and that's fantastic! How long the ride it is, is a bit of an ongoing story that I'll have to update from time to time. The hour each way to Bellingham for the skills test is the most riding I've been able to do so far and it did put me out of commission for the following day and a half with a lot of pain and leg trouble. I hope my back gets more and more used to the riding position as time goes on and the rides get longer and longer.

Thanks again to all of you for your support and I hope to meet more of you as this gets better and better!

    Tim

Both my wife and I took the test at Bellingham. We drove the course before we took the test. The drivers license examinator was helpful and friendly. Hope your back gets better, so you can ryde more.
