    Post Latest Update(steering)from dealer

    Update to
    http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=16202

Well after they have kept it and rode it a few times it started giving them check dps everytime they went to ride it. Brp has been contacted and the latest is that they are to change the gearbox sensor. Wasn't that only on the SE5, not the SM5?? I ask cause service sounded confused when she called me, thinking it was just on SE models that you change that on. If not, anybody else had that changed on theirs after having a new dps??

I don't know how everybody elses dealer feels but mine seems to love the input I can get from here.

Lamont: SAS was ok on it and steering was zeroed out, so that didn't help on mine. But she said it was a great place to start. Thanks!

Thanks Ravi, but I have never had any of those things happen. Had the surging but that stopped after the ECM update was done.

A question for you, was your load volt low from running ad ons?? If so, I have nothing added into the battery, bone stock there. Not even a power outlet(yet).

They might mean the GPS (Gear Position Sensor) which I had changed under warranty on my 2008 SM quite some time ago. Haven't had any steering issues since.

Same here: change GPS at 20K; DPS and steering with no issues at 62K (soon to be a 0K...).

I had the gps changed out a while back - way before I had my steering issue. 08 SM5 - around 9K give or take when my steering acted up.

And that alone leads me to believe that they are only guessing and not taking time to work it out.

I believe that each major part replaced, for the most part, is being sent back to BRP's engineering for a biopsy... to determine what's wrong... to find the root cause.

Any other path on their part would be a death march to insolvency.

I have to say that in my case you are wrong, til this day my old dps is sitting in a corner of my dealers shop. I ask was it to be sent to them for analysis, I was told no, that they had ask brp if they needed it sent to them and was told no.

Thank goodness it's a vast minority of owners who are having problems...there will always be problems with any new piece of sophisticated machinery...hopefully BRP will work hard to correct problems...I don't think they want disgruntled people out there but there are some problems that will go without explanation...

If you had the steering problem, would you still feel the same way?

It's been almost a year now since the one forum member (that I know of) had their serious accident, which appeared to be steering associated, and BRP is no closer to solving the problem. So, does that fall under- "but there are some problems that will go without explanation"; if it does, that's not very comforting, even to those that have not had the steering problem yet.

If you had your DPS unit replaced, there is a chance that they damaged your steering torque sensor. It's a small magnetic device that reads how much force is being delivered to the steering stem. If the sensor gets close to metal, and attaches itself to something, or is scratched. It could be the problem. It takes a special tool to remove and install those. It is located on the bottom of the DPS unit, where the tie-rods are secured to the steering stem.

That is what I was told was damaged in the original dps. So your sayin that it might have been damaged while installing the new one?? So to the customer it really comes down to, hold your breathe on the dps install hoping that they don't mess/touch the torque sensor while doing so. There is such a thing of making a part too sensitive, don't ya think? I thought motorcycles were made to the rough standards since everything is mostly exposed to the elements. It doesn't need parts in them that can be damaged by a simple scratch. Thats Ridiculous.

Even w/ the techs flying out or driving out to see people's spyders, I don't think there is anything they can do right now until BRP's engineering staff get to the root of the problem. I think there are a slew of different steering problems going on - lock ups, intermittant power steering problems, loss of power steering. Besides looking at DPS's, hopefully they might look at their software and how it communicates to all of the working parts. And with different problems, they got different things they need to look at.

Your right, it just blows my mind that it can be so many different things. You would think we bought a custom bike where each one was similar but alot of different components.

Has yours still been doing ok? Or has it got too cold to ride up there?
