    Default Today's photo's

Haven't been able to ride the last 3 weeks due to the unusually cold weather in Florida and just got back from a cruise to much warmer sites. So we had to get in some riding today, before we both go back to work tomorrow

    Irish,

Maybe underthinking this, but there are actually two illusions in play here. The obvious one is the illusion of depth created by making it appear that there is a road (behind the walking couple) leading into a village in the middle distance. The second illusion is the appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the center.

I acknowledge that the artist wasn't as talented as those you've cited, but he was shooting for at least the illusion of depth.

Sorry...don't want to be a hardass but I can't accept it. Nice mural but there is no depth...everything is in 2 dimensions like a wall painting. Appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe s a representation but not an illusion

    Default RK update 012610

(#98 +50) This evening on the way home, I found a Frost-o-Lantern, with Frosty the Snowman on one side, and a Jack-o-Lantern on the other, that simply gets turned around for whichever presentation is desired.

(#83 +50) And, though hours from the sea, I found a lighthouse mailbox, with a functioning lamp.

    Default RK update 012710

+I snagged some doubles (no extra points) heading home this evening, including a four-word series for #90.

(#90 +100) The Amy Bull Crist Area Educational Center (A-B-C), and the House on the Hill Agri-Business Child Development Migrant Head Start (A-B-C-D).
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10061.JPG
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10062.JPG

(#30 NO POINTS) Why no points? IMHO, these pictures suck, and even I have standards... 8^D. I stopped upon the Wallkill River at two points, but it was just too dark for clarity with flash, and my hand doesn't seem steady enough any longer for low light capture without a tripod. Next time, I'll hit this route directly after work for better light conditions and re-present the waterfalls for point count, or aim for other falls at other times...

    Default RK update 013010a

+I spent another 5 hours carousing today, sandwiching my (~10-1:30) 25,000 mile service visit. The temperature was 2*F when I started off at 8am, slide-riding the bike down the snowy driveway (I oughta' just start calling it "the slope") to reach the roadway 500' away, and wondering if I'd make it back up to the house later...
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10064.JPG

(92 NO POINTS) I figured there'd have to be a marquee 20 miles north in New Paltz with the word "new" in it, and after I photographed the New Paltz Animal Hospital, I thought twice about it, because the word "new" is actually on a sign hanging from the marquee, not worded upon the marquee itself. I probably could've found another somewhere in the village, but figured I could catch it another time.
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10065.JPG

(92 +25) A few miles from the village, however, the New York State Police marquee presented itself. (Thankfully, the NYSP themselves didn't, although I might've snagged #15 if they had...) 8^D
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10066.JPG

Next, I stopped briefly at the new Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park to see if it had a vista sign, but no luck. The nearby park next to the Mid-Hudson Bridge had a vista of the Walkway Over the Hudson bridge, but no vista sign, only nice park data placards upon posts. I'll take pics some other time.

(34 +50) After crossing the Mid-Hudson Bridge, I headed north to Springwood, in Hyde Park. Springwood was the birthplace and home of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and remains the only place in the United States where a President was born, maintained a lifelong connection, and lies buried. The site includes the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, and the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site. For no extra points, today was his birthday (January 30, 1882 - April 12, 1945)...
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10067.JPG

(40 NO POINTS) As I was saddling back up to enter Springwood on FDR Drive, I then noticed the Hyde Park Drive-In Theater across the road.
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10069.JPG

(69 +50) I present the wood-sided water tower at the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site in hopes that it is deemed unique enough to satisfy the requirement.
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10070.JPG

The FDR Presidential Library and Museum.
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10071.JPG

(58 NO POINTS) Between Springwood and the dealer I find this, newly reburshished since I last remember its condition several years ago. Images like these are simply tunnels under rail though, and not item #58 railroad tunnels, correct?
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10072.JPG

(42 +10) Next stop was Dutchess Recreational Vehicles, 737 Freedom Plains Rd (Rt 55), Poughkeepsie NY 12603.
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10073.JPG
I believe the outside temperature was 13*F when I laid my frosted-brow helmet upon the service counter.
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10074.JPG
"Dutchess Rec" is a top-notch dealer.
    http://www.dutchessrec.com/pages/abo...s/default.aspx

(37 +25) After service, I aimed southbound for Dutchess Stadium, Home of the Hudson Valley Renegades.
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10068.JPG

Enroute, I rode past Dutchess County Airport, but couldn't find a plane on a stick (#72) anywhere... 8^)

(69 NO POINTS) across I84 from Dutchess Stadium, I spot a red/white checkerboard water tower at the Beacon Correctional Facility. I'd seen a similarly-colored tower at the Mid-Orange Correctional Facility as relayed in an earlier report, though a different style. Red/White Checkerboard isn't quite unique, apparently, so I hope my earlier FDR tower meets muster.
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10075.JPG

(67 +50) At this point, I'm on a quest to get as close as I can to Bannerman Castle, upon Pollepel Island, and in trying to get to the Hudson River for viewpoints, I find contradictory signs. Apparently, when it was decided to stop Dennings Avenue traffic at its intersection with Hudson Avenue, no-one bothered to remove the 15mph sign. While one can likely skid to a stop after seeing the stop sign, the 15mph thing might have them mid-street. I'm just saying. (I'm going to send them a letter.)

(33 +45) A large statue in the courtyard of the Saint Lawrence Of Brindisi Friary, Beacon, NY

Just breakin' your stones Irish. I have agreed with your other interpretations.

But on a semi-serious note regarding taking pictures in someplace other than TX, I happen to be lucky as I live near the borders of TX. For others, such as our SA brethren or TX hill country folks, it is a 6 to 8 hour ryde to any border. Kinda makes it rough on us when we're competing against people that can make it through three or more states in the same time period. And for those of us out here in the wilds of west TX and the panhandle, one can travel 3 to 4 hours before one finds anything on your list other than an animal other than a pet and a county sign. Just messin' with ya....was just wondering if you are aware of the distances involved in this part of the country. Our NM brethren don't have it any easier.

I know, quit whinin' and post some pics right?

    Default RK update 013010b & 013110

    (continuing 013010 into 013110)
(reminder: image presentation can be found in "spyder scavenger hunt" album at Roadkill Online http://www.roadkillonline.net)

(35 NO POINTS) Bannerman Castle is inaccessible by vehicle, and falling to ruin except as best can be salvaged/maintained by interested historical parties in cooperation with New York State. Just this month, a large segment of outer wall collapsed. The Spyder scavenger requirement is for participants to be "at a castle", though, so I'm unsure if this qualifies, since RAKNID & I can't be any further "AT" Bannerman Castle than in these images. "Castle" websites have given me an alternative, however, so I turn around and head back north to I84, aiming for the Roe-Brewster House in New Windsor, back across the Hudson nearer home.
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10079.JPG
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10080.JPG
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10081.JPG

Shortly afterward, I kick myself in the keister because I completely forgot to continue further south on Route 9D to see if there was an accessible view of the railroad tunnels that are visible from the Rt. 218 cliffsides across the Hudson. (I label myself a dumbass.)

(12 +50) Found on Rt. 9W in the City of Newburgh.
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10082.JPG

(35 +50) The 1870 Roe-Brewster Castle, overlooking the Hudson River in New Windsor, NY. (23 rooms, 8 baths. Chestnut stairwell and foyer open into large parlors with 12 foot ceilings, parquet floors, elaborate moldings and fireplaces. Decorated by Louis Comfort Tiffany, whose fixtures remain, including stained-glass central skylight. Charming stone cottage...)
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10083.JPG

This was my last stop of the day, except for the gas station. After refueling, to make "the slope", I took the turn in high second, successfully aiming the rear wheel into the right side's unsnowy tire track to provide asphalt traction. It'd finally warmed up to 18*F when I pulled into the garage...

Today, this last day of January, I aimed northwest.

    (31 +75) Roosa Gap Road
    http://www.roadkillonline.net/imaged...s/35_10084.JPG

(45 NO POINTS) Not quite a waterfall; more an icycle gallery...

(45 +30) Waterfall at the base of the Shawangunks in Ellenville

+Thanks for the clarification, Irish. I wasn't at all sure what a graffiti mural was, and even captured a full wall of material later yesterday (additional to that one tag), but it was <ahem> "colorful", and unsuitable for presentation... 8^D

(4 +25) While meandering around back on January 23rd, I neglected to connect that one of my locales was Florida, New York. (Doh!) So, I went back today to snag this...

    Post RK update 020410

    (02/04/10)

+I had a very enjoyable ride home yesterday afternoon.

(58 +50) Railroad tunnels can be tricky to capture on film without an illegal foot or vehicular trek. Let's face it, the tunnel will usually sharply pierce a hillside or mountainside, whereby the roadway will gradually ascend that brae from another direction, many times not even nearby, and the track property is always posted. Unless the roadway climbs next to the tracks at the tunnel, a photo may be difficult.

Take the Metro-North tunnel under the village of Otisville, in the town of Mount Hope, for example, which is the next railroad tunnel through the Shawangunk Range south of the defunct Bloomingburg/Wurtsboro tunnel I tried to reach a few reports back.

Yesterday, I asked co-worker Jimmy who lives near Otisville if the tunnel was accessible, and he said, "Sure! I rode my ATV through it once. Scared the ***** outta' me!" So I asked if he meant that it was "wheels" accessible, referring specifically to RAKNID, and he said yes. So, after work, I aimed for Otisville.

    >The Otisville Tunnel is the longest tunnel on New York's Metro-North commuter railroad, at approximately 1 mile in length. It was sold to Metro-North by the Norfolk Southern Railway in 2003. It was built by the Erie Railroad and is part of the Erie Main Line. It operated under the auspices of Conrail until it was acquired by Norfolk Southern as part of the breakup of Conrail. Metro-North took over passenger service in 1984.< (Wikipedia)

I approached from the east and instead of following Route 211 under the rail line, I turned left on Kelly Hill Road and checked out the Otisville Station Parking Facility and rails. Though I can see the tunnel from the rail stop, it's quite a distance away, and I can't include RAKNID in the shot. No good, so I skirt the eastern portal's rails on Kelly Hill Road, and as I rise up the slope, the tracks disappear from street view well before the tunnel. Hmmmm.

Okay, onward to the western side. Leaving the village on 211, I turn right on Otisville Road and ride over the western portal, again finding no apparent access. I turned around and checked it out from the shoulder above - no access. Damn.

Resolved to try elsewhere at this point, I start heading home. Riding back east on 211 through the village, I pass a Mount Hope police car heading west, and then catch up to a Metro-North utility pickup heading east. Who better to ask if there's an accessible view? So, I follow it a short distance and it pulls in to the station lot. When it stops, I explain my need and chat up the driver to see if there's an accessible view. "Not on that", he tells me, pointing to RAKNID, "but take a look to see if the gate's open", and he points me to the far side of the station lot. "If it is, you can get in/get out", inferring I should be quick about it. I ride to the west end of the lot, and the gate's open...

    Through it I ride onto the railbed, and^ bumpity^bump^ the^ stones^ toward^ the^ portal^, where I capture this:

I take a looksee image back toward the station, and in the distance see the Metro-North guys crossing the track to work at a large electrical box.

Picture captured, I^ bumpity^bump^ the^ stones^ back^ to^ the^ station lot, and as I progress through the gate into the lot, a police car lights me up...

(16 +100)(aka 001843) Uh-oh. As I stop, I hop off and head to his window, but he motions me quickly back to the bike. I walk back and wait, and when he approaches, I explain what I was doing on the railbed, and that I had their (pointing to the rail guys) permission. He confirms that I just stated I'd been permitted to be there, and then lets me ride off. As I'm never hesitant to thank a cop for letting me be on my way, off I go.

I banged a left on 211 and as I went under the rails I reminded myself that law enforcement pics are part of this hunt, and as I look back toward the tracks, I see that the cop is now with the rail guys, so I turn around and head back. As I approach, I hear one of the rail guys say, "What? Is a cop image required?" I laughed confirmation as I walked toward them, and started regaling them with the other items on the list. "A rainbow!", one exclaims, "You could've gotten that yesterday!" These guys were very helpful to my needs yesterday:

Helpful, too, was Officer Brian Benjamin, of the Town of Mount Hope Police Department, who was more than willing to write me up for my dirty license plate, and confirmed for me that it was a no-cost ticket...

Today, I headed to the NJ border hamlet of Unionville intending to capture Tim's Auto and Truck Detailing in my lens, as seen in Google Streetview. It's now Hank's... 8^(

+My first bike was a Yamaha RD200E, which I'd bought from my sister, who'd purchased it new at (now-defunct) Popp's Cycle Center in Walden, NY. I subsequently did business with Popp's for years before they closed, and across the street from that location is...

+It's getting tougher to find unpointed items in my chilly forays through the countryside, but try I do. I'm going to enjoy watching everyone else clamber for their images when the warmer weather arrives.

These pics are from yesterday's hours-long ride, (before the game, of course...). Thankfully, I'm located just north of the snow, but it got downright nasty chilly before I got home due to the sub-freezing winds. It was 18*F when I started out...

(Please note that these are images temporarily uploaded to a SpyderLovers album, and that I'll be replacing the URLs as soon as my personal site's upload function is restored. Full-res images are always available by request.)
