Default Use a fused relay or can the accessory wire handle this current?

    Evening,

I've recently bought an F3-T and was recently fitting a battery optimiser connection as I only use the bike occasionally. When I removed the frunk basket I noticed several accessories have been wired directly to the battery; 12v socket, Garmin GPS and dual USB socket in frunk. The USB has a blue light that is always on which may explain why my battery is draining.

I'm going to rewire these accessories through the 'customer accessory' wire underneath the frunk but wondered if it would be worth using a 4 pin fused relay for these accessories or does can the accessory wire handle this current?

    Thanks.

My choice would be a fused relay using the "Customer Accessory" as the trigger for the relay contacts to close.

Just a different opinion, I'd use the Customer Accessory Circuit.

From a functional standpoint, this circuit is an independent switched, fused and relay-controlled circuit. Can-Am was gracious enough to provide a fair amount of capacity to this circuit -10A. I would advise only using 80% of this capacity (8A) to keep a healthy safety margin.

From a simplicity standpoint, keeping it simple and avoiding extra wire and parts (potential failure points) is also a good practice.

My OCD will also not allow me to have a bunch of wires all shoved in the battery area looking like a bowl of spaghetti. Sloppy looking work drives me crazy.

IMO, There is no reason to add relays and additional wiring to this circuit as long as the capacity of all additional devices being added does not exceed the safety margin on the circuit. Each device added should still utilize their own fuse to protect the device as the 10A fuse on the circuit will only protect the circuit and the Spyder from damage and potentially allow a device to be damaged due to high current in the event of a short.

    I have a 2023 F3 LTD Special Series.

I was wondering what the part number is for the relay?

Can you please be a little more specific? If you're adding a relay, then any decent automotive grade 12V relay would work just fine.

Here is an example of a "name brand" http://rb.gy/2y6ah6 but I have used "off brand" relays over the years that work perfectly fine as well, but at a lower price point.

Unless you have a specific use/case that requires close to what the 10A Customer Accessible Circuit provides, or already have that circuit used up, then there isn't much of a need for an external relay. By driving power directly from the battery, you introduce the risk of exceeding the Can-Am's ability to charge the battery effectively due to the drain and complexity.

    broderp,

I just want to have an extra relay on my Spyder. (Off topic - My snowmobile which is a 2020 SkiDoo Renegade Endro 900 N/A, and it has relays on it; I am in the process of getting extra relays for my sled). So I would like to have an extra relay.

    Thanks for the info.

I'll take look at the website that you posted.

Got it. I wasn't trying to force an opinion on you. My comments were for anyone else who may stumble across the thread later and have similar questions

Any "Bosch" type relay will work for what you need.

    broderp,

OK. I think that other people on this site would have asked the same question that you asked me. OK.

When I get a chance I'll take a look at the automotive part stores in my area.
