This was supposed to be a Day trip for me. It happened on Rt 13 just north of Smyrna, I was headed to Bennet's Pier beach to have lunch on the beach, drive down the coastal highway from Rehoboth then make a quick pass of the Bikefest in OC and head out on Route 50 back home. Funny thing about this is this was a longer route to OC from Frederick that I was scouting for my wife because it is supposed to be "safer" than going on any major highway or across the bay bridge. HAH! The joke is on me for that one! LOL

I went back out today and retrieved my personal stuff and after seeing the backend I removed my corbin as I don't think the crawler is coming back home. The guy hit me on the left side of the rear which broke the fender clean off of the swing arm jamming it in between the tire, shock and bottom of the seat. Then the tire acted like an airbag and blew out.

When you look down from the top of the rear the left side of the tire is underneath the center of the reverse light so the swingarm is bent hopefully it didn't bend the mount but that is being very hopeful.

And the wife made it very clear to me today after seeing the damage . If it is totaled there will be no immediate replacement which totally sucks.

This bike literally brought me back out of a very depressive state I was in after my brother passed a couple of years ago and I was laid off right as the pandemic started.

Being able to get outside and ride literally was wind therapy for me and now it possibly will be gone. I don't know what I'm going to do if that happens.

I thank everyone for the well wishes and prayers. I'm going to need them as I think I am going to have more mental damage than physical from this one.

Yea this is going to be interesting. State Farm is the insurer for owner the vehicle that hit me. The vehicle was being driven by someone who does not live at the same address as the owner/registered address of the vehicle.

State Farm has not contacted me yet about the claim I filed online with them other than sending me an email with the case number / name of the agent it was assigned to.

Wind therapy can come in different forms. I do understand your wife's position. After reading your riding history, I think you are either the unluckiest or the luckiest rider! Unlucky to have so many major incidences, or lucky to have come through them as well as you have. Perhaps you can find an alternative that will satisfy your mental needs and desires as well as satisfy your wife's concerns.

A little information about my experiences..... Been riding bikes for well over 50 years. Went to 3 wheels when I turned 70. Did a solo month-long road trip last August on the trike. Pretty much got burned out doing motels and dodging thunderstorms almost every day. After many, many years of doing extended as well as short term touring, I seemed to have lost my appetite to continue. This summer I bought myself a Mustang convertible. Yesterday I did a 225 mile lunch trip that I have done many times on the bike. I found the convertible provides me with the much needed wind therapy with a little more comfort. Now, as I approach 80, I still have my trike in the stable but it has a new Mustang stable-mate. I'm not quite ready to give up bikes but the Stang is mentally becoming my preferred touring vehicle.

Everybody is different and what suits me is for me alone. But just throwing out an idea that MAY work for both you and your wife. Glad you've come through the accident in tact and hoping the insurance claim works out to your advantage. Good luck..... Jim

I am very sorry about your accident. I'm glad you're okay. Sorry about your trike. I have no experience riding Spyder, I'm still struggling to get mine on the road. Up until 20 years ago I rode bikes my whole life. I was never rear ended but run off the road dozens of times. Once I had to bust out the passenger window and climb into a dingbats car to avoid a pole she was running me into. Sometimes they didn't look, sometimes they look but don't see. I have learned to be an extremely cautious rider. I hope you don't give up or ride scared. May God bless you.

I did a lot or research and found lots of fun little convertibles out there. Tops on my list were Mazda Miata, Honda S2000, BMW Z4 (I owned one several years ago), and Mustang. I settled on a Mustang for a lot of personal reasons. Then I spent several months looking until the right car and deal came along. I found a garage queen cream puff with extremely low mileage. Even though it's older and bone stock, it shows well. In fact last Saturday I participated in a local car show and the old gal was not an embarrassment. My horizons have expanded. Good luck on whatever you do..... Jim

Normally, wouldn't your insurance company contact State Farm and handle this for you? It is why we pay the rates we do. Besides, I am sure State Farm prefers to handle this with your insurance company rather than you.

The Miata is a blast. I think you need to be 6' or under and less than 240 or it will be a little hard to get in and out. Not a lot of storage. Great handling, power to weight and superb fuel mileage.

I hear you Clover! I was rear-ended on I-40 a little over a year ago on my brand new R1250GSA. I was going about 35-40 and was slowing down for merging traffic and the lady behind me, a State Farm agent, noticed at the last moment traffic was slowing down, tried to swerve, but clipped my pannier rack on the left side and threw me off the bike. I was Gun shy for a while, but the urge to ride was too strong, so I got back on the horse. My last accident was on Father’s Day weekend on my K1600 and didn’t involve another vehicle. I was turning, hit an oil slick and the bike slid right out from under me and that’s when I decided to move to 3 wheels. Give it some time and see if you still have the desire to ride. It’s a decision only you can make. Best of luck, wherever the road takes you and keep safe! Also, I’ve never driven one, but another option is a Polaris Slingshot.

If my F3 gets totalled I'll be getting another one and I will hop back on that saddle again with no hesitation.

If I had one in my driveway at the moment I would already be back out on it.

It is just the matter of how much the wife is going to delay that happening if it is totalled.

I can attest to this. I sat in a newer one at a local dealer. I'm 6'2" and my head would be squished if I were to put the top up. Really wish Honda would bring back the s2000.

My wife is more of a miata fan, with me if I were to consider one it would be something like an older muscle car I could work on.

I would love to find an old 71 impala convertible.

My first car was a 71 Impala hardtop that I bought for under a hundred bucks and I made it last me for a couple of years until I sold it to a friend of mine who burned up the engine compartment trying to prime the carbs when he ran out of gas one day.

I would love to have the convertible version of it. That is if the wife enforces the no spyder rule. Otherwise I'm staying with my old/new F3 depending on what happens.

With the way that swing arm is bent, it most likely bent the mount point on the frame which means a reframe, already had one of those done 3 months after I bought it. It was almost $12,000 at 2021 prices.

I doubt they will do it again. Plus it was a honda civic that hit me and it wedged itself in between the tire and the seat before sending us off into the intersection. It wouldn't surprise me if that section hasn't been pulled in an upward direction as well.

The guy hit me hard enough that it took a section out of the rear sprocket out where it hit. Wouldn't surprise me if there isn't some engine damage as well from the sudden stop of the drivetrain when the fender locked up against the bottom of the seat and the tire.

Ouch! Seems like your bike is a goner. Be sure to list every single farkle at the installed price to the ins. Co. Also, and I hate to say this, maybe contact a lawyer. You may end up with a Miata and a Sea to Sky out of the deal. Glad you are ok and blessings to you and the family.

Well, this will have to be my last post on the subject for a while as what happened today will probably require it.

My insurance got in touch today and we called Diamond MotorSports in dover and they will be picking up the Crawler to take care of her.

And then the bad news from my insurance company. Apparently state farm is saying that they don't know if the owner is insured with them or not.

I don't know how this is going to unfold in the next couple of weeks so I better not say anything else on the subject until there is resolution.
