Default Where do you carry your Spare key?

So does anyone else take a spare key on a long trip. I have two factory supplied keys but am always afraid I will lose the main key I use in the ignition so I like to carry the spare. Problem is where do I hide it that I don't need a key to open up and get access? You can see from my signature line that I have a 2022 RTL Sea to Sky. The only unlocked storage is the glove box and I'm afraid that a fully programed key that close to the ignition switch will mess up the computer. Thought about wrapping the spare in tin foil and putting it in the glove box but what does everyone else do????

Put it in a magnetic key holder and attach it to the engine out of sight.

One problem with our machines is that the plastic compartments are awfully easy to break into. Two suggestions: Search "hide key" in the search box of this site. Or safety-pin the spare to the lining of your jacket.

Open one of the access panels and tape it to a wire or bundle of wires that are normally out of sight when the panel is open.

You can clip the tie wraps holding the bundle out of the way (out of sight) then put a new tie wrap on it after the key is taped to it.

Use electrical tape. Nothing real unusual about electrical tape on a bundle of wires.

If you need a special tool to open the access panel, keep that in the glove box or tank bag.

I carry one of the factory keys and my wife has a key that we had cut at our local hardware store. My DESS has been disabled so her key will start the Spyder. I take the two wheeler if traveling alone, but if for some reason I take the Spyder I put the cut key in my wallet behind my AMA card.

Doesn't the glove box lock when you turn the wheels all the way right or left, and then turn the key all the way to the left [not pushing down]? I thought they all did that...

Most of the time if I am in Maine, I just leave it in the switch! If someone wants it they will get it, one way or another. And there will be a helmet sitting there for them to put on also, sitting over it.

Haven't done anything with the Spyder yet but in the Harley, I have a non-chipped key hidden to access the trunk. In the trunk, I have hidden a programmed key wrapped in aluminum foil so it's not being read by the security system.

Years ago I could start my '72 BMW with a nail, so I got in the habit of leaving the "key" in the ignition hole. Although I do take my key out of the ignition and lock my cars here i Utah, I don't take the key out of the Spyder. I just put my gloves on top of it when I park it. I actually never carry a spare key. I hope I didn't just jinx myself.

My spare is in the trunk. I have a flat key cut so it unlocks the trunk in my wallet. It can unlock the trunk and saddlebags and I get access to the spare.

I used to carry it in the inside pocket of my jacket, but when I'm stopped for a break, I leave the jacket on the seat so not a good plan.

I've just started using a leg bag so my phone, SPOT tracker, spare key, and registration stay with me.

The key I'm using goes onto a lanyard around my neck when I'm stopped, along with a USB with my ICE info (In Case of Emergency).

    Ryde safe,
    Rod.

There are several places you can hide a key. Some people have a non-chipped key somewhere easer to get to and the chipped key some place harder to get too. You could have a non-chipped key taped to the back of the glove box when pulled out as long as you do not plan to lock your handle bars as this locks the glove box too or behind the speaker grill, or behind one of the side panels. Then hide the chipped key in the frunk somewhere.

At home in a drawer where all of my spare keys/fobs are. If I were on a long trip (and remembered to think about it) I would probably carry a spare in my jeans pocket.

The well known Ilco X270 unchipped key beveled as shown in the picture allows me to open any locked compartment on my Spyder and even set and release the parking brake. It resides in my wallet that is never off my person. I keep a second chipped key...

And if DESS is disabled these keys will start the Spyder.

Since mine has to have a chipped key hidden plus I can open the frunk and seat without a key.
