Spyder Is an ECU Modification permanent? Will BUDS overwrite it next service?

I notice several people have had the ECU flashed for increased performance. Is this a permanent operation? If I spend the $400 to have it done and have to connect the machine to BUDS somewhere down the road for repairs or whatever, will BUDS reset it back to stock? I'd hate to lose my "investment".

I have a 2019 F3L which I performed the Monster Fuel Injection ECU upgrade. My choice was to buy the Genius Tool offered by MFI so as can can revert back to stock configuration at any time.
    Purchased Stage 1
    Installation was easy following instructions.
Results were ……in my opinion are worth it if you’re not afraid of spending money. No more wait to start because of safety warning. Off idle scared me at first, instant response. Cooling fans come on 10 degrees cooler……engine runs cooler……I noticed this …..richer fuel
    mixture.
I did back to back fuel mpg on a long trip with 2 up with a trailer…..I got 33.1mpg both tanks.
I passed a vehicle on that trip ……engine hit maybe 5k rpm…….I was impressed.
Some say stage 2 is more exhilarating.
You may consider checking with someone who owns BUDS to see if any factory updates are available for your ride before modifications.

Terry, you can either have it flashed by someone like Wick-It plugging in and downloading the new tune, which you may lose if your dealer has to reset your ECM…..I believe Wick-It will reload it at no cost to you)……or you can have Wick-It or similar open your ECM and download it permanently ( that is what I had done on my ‘16 F3-L). It improves the performance of the Spyder on so many levels….I have never regretted the money spent.

Probably the best option these days is to buy the Genius tool Chris mentions which allows you to add or remove the tune at will. No need to send your ECM away, just do it all at home.

I went directly to stage 2. Very impressive over the stock ECU. I've had my ride into the dealer once for repairs since I did the reflash. I told the shop manager about my upgrade and not to erase my expensive reflash. He said he'd note that on the work order. For double safety, I attached a note to the connector under the panel on the right side just below the headlight advising not to delete my reflash. When I picked up my spyder the BRP tech laughed and said he didn't screw up my stage 2. But.............you can't be too careful these days. By the way Terry, my MPG didn't change significantly at all. After I quit playing with it I maybe lost only a couple of MPG.

This option is ONLY for 2017 and newer though, just to be clear.... ;-)

EDIT: The same goes for the new programmer from Monster/WickIt....

Where do you buy the Genius tool? The Monster site has the software for it but doesn't have the tool listed. eBay has a couple without the interface.

I don't think there is an ACTUAL tool ..... I think it is just access to the program, so you can adjust it ..... I could be wrong, but I don't think so ..... good luck .... Mike

The tool exists marketed by DimSport, but it apparently only works on 2017-20 1300 RT models. I also saw one on eBay with no connectors. I don't know if one works on an F3-S.

BikerChris wrote earlier that he has the tune, PLUS the Genius box on his 19 F3-L, which is at odds with the claim above that it only works on 17-20 RT models, Terry.

Yeah, you’re “sort of” wrong, Mike …..it is not a tool as such, but is a magic box about the size of a cigarette packet. It comes with the tune downloaded on it, you plug it in to your Spyder’s ECM, and it downloads the new tune. You can then use it to back out the tune at any time, and reinstall it.

Yep, 2dogs……I was agreeing with Mike that it wasn’t a tool (as in a 10mm socket) but it was a “tool” in terms of getting the job done …….clear as mud ?

Also, with the Power Vision, you can data log your riding for tuning purposes. I bought my PV from Fuel Moto. I sent them 30 minutes of various data logged rides and they built me a custom map. Byke runs awesome. I now have (3) maps + stock tune stored.

Do you need to buy a license for a CAN-AM Spyder? I watched the video and saw that mentioned. Can you flash and unflash as many times as you want?

Actually according to Monster, you can get the Stage 1 or Stage 2 flashes done, and for an extra $350 you can get the "hand held file downloader", which happens to be the MyGenius, for anther $350. Ouch! I think I'll have to put up with the "slug" that is my F3-S Daytona. Apparently Monster is not going to just sell the tool without doing a flash first.

Just guessing here but the Powervision doesn't give you the ability to bypass the mode button fiasco ???

Pretty close, but I believe you do the flash yourself, at home, using the MyGenius, which comes with the new tune loaded, Terry. Only you can make the call as to whether you believe it is of value to you. For me, it was worth every penny.

Mode button fiasco, Cobwebs? On my 16 F3-L and 21 RT-L you turn on the ignition and immediately press the mode button which removes the safety display, and hit start. Even on the earlier models you simply turn the ignition on, put your gloves and helmet on, then press the button and go. It really isn’t that big of a deal

As soon i put switch to on and display is still off i press mode and no message show up. Dynojet here, i believe the monster tune with genius is a rip-off. Almost double than dynojet.will love to race mine with monster tune to see if its twice as fast.

Hmm, so are you saying it's a built in feature of the Dynojet to shortcut the message (I didn't see that stated on their website) or are you and Peteoz recruiting for your next heist?

When you buy the new device and connect it to your machine, it is mated to that ECU. No other tuning license needed. If you want to use the tuning device to another Spyder, you need to purchase a license for the second and subsequent) machines.
