Default What oil are you using for your 1330 engine?? Tips & hints on oil change?

I did a search but only found some post a few years old on the subject.

What oil are you using for your 1330 engine? I have a 2018 and a 2019 F3L. Just got a quote from the dealer to do an oil change. Not trying to be funny but it sounded to me like I was gonna pay to put his kids through college cost. Found several youtube videos and it looks like something I can do. I would appreciate any tips and or techniques you could share. Also trying to find if I can get the oil locally.

    Thanks
    John

Personally putting an oil that has additive packages that formulate it for a diesel has no place in my bike; but that’s just me. I know a lot of guys do it, but I prefer to stick with an actual motorcycle oil. I only run Mobil 1 10-40 Racing 4T in my bikes, along with BajaRon’s filter kit.

And we're off to the races. Let's do tires while we're at it.

Since you asked Rotella in my 1330 as in all of my bikes with trans/engine unit for years. Three of those bikes have an excess of 100,000 miles on them. My BMW and Guzzi have separate transmission and engine setups with a dry clutch so a different animal.

You'll get a hundred different answers here.
Rotella is fine, and it meets the spec for the clutch. No harm in a diesel oil in a motorcycle. Primary difference is a small amount of silicone added to minimize foaming in a HEUI diesel engine so the injectors will fire properly. Silicone won't harm a gas engine. Get it at WM.
Supertech Motorcycle Oil, made by Warren. Good oil, available nationwide at WM.
Valvoline Motorcycle oil is relatively cheap, meets the spec, and is available locally most anywhere. (WM and AZ)
Castrol can be found in some auto parts stores. It's fine as well, and Castrol is rumored to make the BRP oil. (AZ)
Shell Advance Motorcycle oil. Great stuff, finally imported due to demand. (Advance Auto)
I'm running Mercury Quicksilver. Found on closeout a few years back for a couple dollars a quart.
I bought all 4 cases right then. Meets the spec, works fine, no bad habits.
Still in the wild in a few places, and Amazon for 33.xx a gallon.
Read the label, you are looking for a 10w or 15w40 for summer, JASO MA, and whatever your finances can afford. 5w40 if you are a diehard that rides all winter. If it meets the spec, it meets the spec. So called "conventional" oils, change a bit more often, synthetics, run them a little longer if you choose. I still don't agree on the 9000 plus miles BRP calls for regardless of oil or type. Oil changes don't have to be stressful or require a second mortgage.

Your search must be broken. There have been 3 or 4 oil threads on here in the past couple of months.

If you read your operator's guide and use oil that meet the API Service Code(s) for your engine you aren't going to go wrong. The only way you can know how the oil is performing is to have it analyzed.

    Here's my 2 cents worth.

I only run Mobil 1 10-40 Racing 4T in my bike also. Good stuff and IMHO it will quieten the transmission clunk to hardly noticeable.

I purchased the K&N straight from K&N on sale for 8.79ea and free shipping as I purchased 3 of them. Both are really good filters.

I just buy my oil with the filter kit and ebc brakes for my yearly spring maintenance change out from lamonster. I also bought the K+N air filter this year so I don't ever have to buy one of those again.

Tried and true products and formulated just for our machines.

Have you ever used the little search engine at the top of the page, if so, you will find thousands of oil postings till your eyes bleed! As far as what oil to use, just make sure it's wet clutch compatable, and use whatever you want!! Good luck my freind, now off to the races we go!!!

2021 Spyder RTL. my last oil change at the dealer was $300 +-. I looked at the parts list used and was shocked what few parts were used.
I decided put this 76 year old body on the floor and change my own oil, like I was still in my youth.

    CORRECTED:
IT WAS POINTED OUT TO ME THAT THE OIL I USED WAS NOT FORMULATED WITH JASCO MA2 AS REQUIRED BY BRP.
I DRAINED THIS OIL AND REFILED WITH:
VALVOLINE 10W-40 MOTORCYCLE 4 STROKE FORMULATED WITH "JASO MA2".
    THANKS

    THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP.

I use Lucas High Performance Motorcycle Oil, Synthetic 20W-50.

It is approved for wet clutch applications. Have also used the Mobil1 4T in the past, but mostly stay with the Lucas Motorcycle Oil.

I don't really think it matters much what brand you use, if it is approved for wet clutch and you are changing it on a regular basis.

Changing the oil is not rocket surgery........ basic hand tools, and automatic transmission funnel.

I looked at the specs and this does not appear to meet the requirements for our engines/transmissions unless I missed something. Check for yourself and good luck. I did not see a JASO classification.
