Default Will Trailer wiring harness from 2016 F3L fit a 2020 RTL?

Did anyone use your F3L wiring harness on the 2020 RTL? The show chrome harness says it fits all F3 2016 and newer and RT 2020 and newer.

I have an after market PNP wiring harness from my 2016 F3L and I am wondering if it should work on my 2020 RTL.

Did you actually use this with your 2016 F3L? The reason I ask is I just searched through a whole bunch of threads about the trailer harnesses for the F3 and RT. RTs up through 2017 used a Y connector, which yours is (plus it has the module), with 10 pin connectors. Supposedly all F3s use a harness with 16 pin connectors. The one you show above has 12 pin connectors. That makes me wonder if the early F3 used a 12 harness and then later the F3 was changed to a 16 pin. The 2018 RT changed to a 16 pin connector harness.

Your best bet is to look at the harness under the seat of your new RT and verify the number of pins in the connectors.

My understanding is that the wiring harness from 2018 and up will work. We currently have the harness from our 2018 F3 on the 2021 RT and it works fine. I beleave the harness prior to 2018 is different.

FYI, it only needs to be a couple of inches long. You disconnect a connector in the cargo harness and insert this in between the two halves. It simply taps into the cargo harness for the needed light feeds.

Apparently you are not familiar with the fact there are two approaches to connecting a trailer harness to the bike wiring. The OEM method, and the one some after market suppliers use, is to plug a Y harness into the connector between the main harness and the cargo harness. That harness only needs to be long enough for its two connectors to plug into the two halves of the main to cargo connector.

The other method is used only by after market suppliers. That is a harness that uses AMP connectors to plug into the connectors of the taillight assemblies themselves. The one al0vely shows above is the OEM type harness, not the kind that connects directly into the taillight assemblies.

Have you installed one that plugs into the harness under the passenger seat?

I purchased a wiring harness but questioned the need for it when reading the fitment listed for the item.

The compatibility listings are not identical for all brands and styles of trailer harnesses. Here is what I have ferreted out from the BRP catalog and installation instructions.

2010 to 2017 RTs use a BRP (and some after mkt like the one you show above) Y harness that plugs into the main/cargo harness 10 pin connector under the passenger seat.

2018 to 2019 RTs, and 2018+ F3s use a BRP (and some after mkt like the one you show above) Y harness that plugs into the main/cargo harness 16 pin connector. I don't find any info that indicates the F3 harness has changed since 2018.

2016 to 2017 F3s use a BRP (and some after mkt like the one you show above) Y harness that plugs into the main/cargo harness 12 pin connector. That is what you have.

For 2020+ RTs BRP, and some vendors, sell a harness that plugs into the connectors to the tail light assemblies. That's why fatboy said yours is too short, which it is, but it's actually the wrong configuration completely to connect to the tail lights.

In a lot of discussions here in early 2020 the consensus was the same harness that works on the 2018 & 2019 RTs would also work in the 2020 RTs. This leads me to believe that the 2020+ RTs can use either of two harnesses, the one that plugs into the tail light connectors or one that plugs into the main/tail light 16 pin connector under the seat. Can anyone verify if this is the case? Or did that option change from 2020 to 2021 for the RT? If yours had 16 pin connectors you possibly could have used it on your 2022 RT.

To confuse matters more some after market vendors sold a harness that plugged into the tail lights of the 2010 to 2019 RTs, the same way as the current BRP harness for 2020+. It looks to me like the tail light connectors have changed since 2019 so those earlier after market harnesses won't fit the 2020+ RTs.

So, in short, the harness you show above won't work for your 2020 RT because it's 12 pin, not 16 pin.

Another big difference between the BRP harnesses (all years) and the after market ones is the BRP harness is three pieces; the Y, or module, harness, the module itself, and the trailer pigtail. The Show Chrome harness, and the one you have, are a single piece harness.

According to the product info and installation videos on Pierre's site, www.canamspyderaccessories.com, the harness that connects under the seat will work on all RTs from 2018 to 2023. So we do have two options for the trailer harness for the 2020+ RTs, the under seat connected one and the tail light connected one.

The under the seat harness is by far the easier of the two. The oem harness requires you to remove the rear panel for the installation.
I have done both and prefer the under the seat method.

I have to agree. As far as ease of installation, under the seat is much easier. I, too, have installed both on my 2020 RT Limited.

fatboy, it looks like we both were mistaken. I didn't realize the OEM harness is now a tail light connected harness and apparently you weren't aware that that older under seat harness could still be used on the 2020+ RT. Based on the comments above about ease of installation you might want to consider using one of those the next time you install a trailer hitch for someone.

Default Thanks all for the discussion

I appreciate all the discussion here and have finally got my RT opened up and it looks like I have a harness to sell.

IdahoMtnSpyder was right on with the pin differences - I think you enjoyed the challenge.
