It's an early Nintinth Century Spy device. I think maybe used in our civil war, with humans on board.
    Chinese had balloons forever.

So many possibilities! I do not believe it is a weather balloon or that it's here by accident. Trial balloon? What's next. I wonder why it was allowed to invade our country and get all the way to Montana before we heard about it. And my understanding is that the media and government only disclosed its existence AFTER people were spotting it. Wonder if there is a way to capture without destroying it. Maybe that's what the CCP is wanting to know also. Again, lots of possibilities and most of them are scary.

Too little, too late. As usual. Last thing it was monitoring was the weather (IMO). This incident (delayed action) does not put us in a favorable light.

Just a reminder to keep the political statements down to zero.

It has been confirmed that the baloon was shot down as it moved over water just past the Carolinas. It was taken down inside the 12 mile limit of the ocean.

You all know that we (the US) has been doing this for years to Russia and other sensitive countries. Remember Francis Gary Powers and the U2 incident?

The Chinese balloon being flown over our country was not a real smart move IMO. I do think they were "testing the waters." I guess they were told a thing or two.

When I lived in Alaska, Russian planes were frequently being intercepted by our fighter jets as they were always testing the parameters. They also used "fishing boats" for the same tactics.

Further, complete details will be forthcoming quickly on the balloon kill, I hope.

The Martians crashed one in Roswell, NM around 1947. They didn't find out what the weather was like either.

Just heard on the news about the F22. It can fly Mach 2.2 and has a ceiling of 65K.

Just wonder what the purpose was? If spying is the purpose I'm sure they have satellites that can read my license plate and probably have.

China said it was a weather balloon. Why would they lie? I'm sure they're telling the truth. Just positive. Ya know, more or less positive. Sort of positive. Maybe.

The big challenge with dealing with something like this is how do you disclose what you know about it, and its purpose, and what data it is gathering, without letting the other side know that you know and how you know it? I think it was Reagan who commented one time that the US is in a tough position when it comes to calling Russia on their violations of arms treaties because to do so would give away the fact that we had intelligence methods that let us know about their violations.

A lot of people criticized our intelligence failure to accurately assess Iraq's WMD capabilities before we went in there. But think about this. If you were in the WMD development industry, and things weren't going well, would you have told Saddam Hussein that? Of course not. You would have lost your head. So I think our intelligence knew exactly what Saddam was being told, and we were fooled right along with him.

Espionage and intelligence is a messy business and we ordinary mortals will never be given the true in-depth background story until its disclosure poses no danger.

Well I heard from a reliable source that the difference in the camera's on that Balloon, is they can show you the Texture of the paint on that plate...... The speed 25,000 MPH +/- and distance from earth make the Balloon platform much easier to get the best Pics ..... Mike

I read where the ballon was the size of a couple of buses. Kind of hard to miss a couple of buses floating lazily across the country. And I seem to remember Japan dropped a bomb on Oregon using a balloon during WW II.
