Default What else could be causing Exhaust fumes around the rider?

2012 RSS. I’m getting exhaust fumes when shifting. From what I’ve read on here, bad Y pipe gaskets cause this. Pulled it apart yesterday and changed them but it didn’t need it. Changed anyway because it was apart and I had new ones. What else could be causing this?
    Thanks, Mark

Did you also check the seal between the 'Y' pipes & the Cat/Cat Eliminator??

If they're all OK, then you've gotta look further down the pipe... If you've got an a/mkt exhaust that's shorter than the OEM exhausts, that can do it.... but generally it's just the air turbulence caused around & past the lower extremities of your Spyder being sucked up into the Low Pressure area behind any screen you might have &/or around & behind the rider - often made worse by any panniers or trunk bags you may have fitted. On the RT's, fitting a 'Whale Tail' type spoiler or carrier rack (Rivco Adjustable) will smooth out the turbulence & lessen if not remove their marked tendency to pick up the exhaust fumes &/or any rain/dust etc from down there & dump it down the back of the Pillion's neck, but I don't know if that'd work on an RSS??

Still, it might not hurt to try; and you can help yourself see the airflow & any turbulence by securing a bunch of 3"-4" long strings of wool by one end onto your Spyder, leaving the loose ends to flap around as 'tell-tales' when you're ryding along - where the loose ends flap & point is what the airflow is doing; so you can then look at ways of changing/modifying that flow... My RT looked really odd when I did that, but it helped see the problem & so I worked out a solution!

    Good Luck!

Many times, when you overfill the gas, it goes into a canister and if not emptied can put off fumes.

That would be my question. Is it for sure exhaust fumes? Or maybe raw fuel? 2 different issues.

These are exhaust fumes and definitely when shifting. Haven’t noticed on de-accel but I’m pretty sure it does then too.
