Default Show Chrome Trunk Rack After Thoughts.

Although was not really needed, I decided to purchase and instal myself the trunk rack on my 21 RTLT. Directions were easy to follow and installed without an issue. So I realize the added weight does not allow the lid to remain open on it's own, but what annoys me is the lid is now slightly twisted and the right front bracket that goes into a hole or pocket, now needs to be twisted a bit to the right for the lid to close. With the rack sitting on the lid while fitting, it seemed to be hitting all 4 mounting points equally, not sure what's going on here.

I just removed my trunk rack. Really is heavy and you are correct, won't let the lid stay open. The trunk lid is shot. I don't/won't the rack.

This is what I used. My holes in the lid were 5/16". And the end result.

Good idea, I can live with that, and maybe reinstall only if going on a big trip and is needed.

Thanks for this post. I was actually considering one for mine. But with only possibly needing it for one big trip, it is not worth it to me.

It isn't hard to install the rack IF needed. The trim panel thingees make it pretty easy on the eyes. Good luck.

I put racks on my last three bikes (1 Kawi and 2 Victories). I seriously thought about putting one on the Spyder, still a little up in the air. Thank you Pjveetwin for the pic - easier to visualize how it would look.

Not sure that with the bag configuration of the Spyder, along with the room in the frunk, if we would use it, as has been stated above.....

put one on the F3 Limited and use it anytime we take a trip two-up. The lid on the F3 does not use the hydraulic openers so that is not a problem. We use it for our jackets if we are not wearing them, as the bags are full for two of us.

The more I look at that trunk rack, the more I think that it is upside down or maybe it's these old eyes..

It looks like it might be installed backwards. This is how it shows it installed on Spyderpops page. I have a new 2023 RT S2S on order and was considering getting this rack.

I installed the following trunk rack. Then I installed a second strut because it increased the weight of the trunk lid and it wouldn't stay open on its own. Works great, with no issues. The rack allows my wife and I to carry enough stuff for a weekend jaunt and even a 3-dayer without having to pull the trailer for more storage.

I put a show chrome rack on my Honda 1800, One of the Goldwing accessories site had bigger washers to put in under the rack to keep the lid from cracking. You might consider looking or install larger washers with rubber washers underneath. If can find it in my old files I'll post where they are.

But they are out of stock....

That's a nice kit, too bad they're out of stock. Try doing a wider search. If no luck finding an in stock kit then you can put together almost all the same items at Ace Hardware for under $5. That's the route I went and 40k miles later my rack and trunk lid are still in good shape.

Good idea on the 5/16 trim plugs, were they from Amazon? I installed the rack on my 20 RTL and now find I don't need it, but there it is if I don't.

As per the pictures on spyderPops, you're right, it's reversed, but if you look closer, the picture is not like my 21 RT, the box is much bigger and flat. When I originally was fitting the rack on my box, my box is smaller and wider to the rear than the front, like the rack. By reversing it, it follows the lines on my box. Looked really dumb the other way. The other rack really looks square where mine is tapered. I don't think they are not the same rack. Also when reversed, the wider mounting holes fell right on the ridge section on my box and would not sit flat. Look at the picture with the tape. So in my opinion, 5/16" holes were too big, yeah, easier to lay out and allow for some slop........ It takes a 1/4" bolt, so I used a minimal clearance bit for a 1/4" Had no problem screwing the bolts in. Anyhow, still makes no difference with the extra weight on the lid and warping my lid a bit.

I will have to admit that you need to experiment with the size of the holes that were drilled. I wound up using A/C vacuum plugs cus they are flexible and fit tight.

I have the rack on my 2017 and it was installed by the previous owner. I suppose he did a good job installing it because it works great with no issues. The lid stays open... barely. But it does.

image9.jpeg Any additional weight of the trunk lid will overload the lift struts. Easy solution is the to add the prop that has been sold by Pierre and shown by NorwegianRT and elucidated by so many folks. image6.jpeg
