Default Search Question - anywhere that explains Search in detail?

Hi. Is there a area on the forum that explains Search in detail? Want to search for a phrase. Like changing brake fluid. Want only the posts with those words in that order. Not every post with every word. Other forums use “ on each end of the phrase. Others use + between the words. Thanks. Tom.

Firstly, let me just say that the 'in-built' Search facility here isn't really the greatest, largely because there's just SOO MUCH in the way of info here already, so any search is likely to return either a vast amount of info, or very little; altho often the latter is because you've gone too specific in your search criteria. However, you can always use the major search engines to help, just add 'site:spyderlovers.com' to your google/bing/duck-duck-go/whatever search string to limit their results to only this site - maybe some search engines use a different delimiter, but you can always restrict their posted results to just one site somehow.

As for your question, you can use either/both methods here, altho I'd suggest going to 'Advanced Search' first (just under the Search box up in the top right). Once there, you should see these words in the search field: 'space; + bar; + quote' - note they are separated by a ; at the end of each word, then the + to show the next word must be included (those words are only there as a sample/guide, you don't need to leave them there.) So you can try entering each word of your search string like that ^^; you can enter the phrase like this "changing brake fluid"; OR you can combine both.

Either way, I'd suggest you first try your search after clicking 'Search Titles Only' from the drop down list immediately to the right of the box next to the Search box (or under it in the basic Search) and then looking thru the thread titles that are returned for anything close to what you're after. The thread titles are meant to briefly state the poster's question or the purpose of the thread, but we do still have quite a few titles that are pretty vague.... not everyone thinks about those who may want to search on the same subject later, and as I mentioned, there's a whooole lot of info here already! If you can't find the info by looking thru the thread titles, you can try searching entire posts, but if you thought you got a lot of results with just titles, watch out for how many you get when it's looking in each post!!

And of course, you can always ask for help from any of the Moderators (we've got the Green usernames) either here or via PM

    Good Luck!
