2013 Spyder RT-Limited vs. 2014> RT-LTD (Maybe RS-LTD)
Is the newer 2014 with the 1300 and other upgrades significantly superior to the 2013? I am agonizing over the purchase of a 2013 Spyder or 2014>s. There are a few in my area that are worthy of consideration. Nice shape very low to med mileage. We will likely be relatively light users. I understand this is pretty subjective but hope some comments might aid me in my decision. Thanks

I would go with the 2014.

Any particular reason that stands out? The 2013 is in amazing condition.

2014 RT, larger engine better MPG, what more do you want?

Have the 2013 models had the fire bomb modification? The 2014 is better all around unless you are looking for a revving V-twin.
Artillery lends dignity to what would
otherwise be a vulgar brawl.

Add to that - 9300 miles between oil changes vs 3k

How would it be used? The RT is primarily a long distance touring machines which is why the 1330 engine is better.
If that's not how you will use it, get the 998.

I add you don't have to check the valve clearance on the 1330.

I have had both the 998 and the 1330. Both are good. There are benefits to buy the 14 as already stated. I bought a 2012 cus it was a reasonable price. I figured if I didn't like a spyder I wasn't going to loose a lot of cash. Ride them both. Get what you like and your pocket book can afford.

I had four of the 998 twin cylinder Spyders. The other three have been 1330 threes.
The 1330 is the better choice in my opinion. Better gas mileage (10 mpg average), lower maintenance (oil every 9,000 or once a year), no $1500.00 valve checks required. There was a problem with fires on the 2013. About 10 known....it was a bit overblown (unless it was yours that went up in flames), a fix to vent the heat was done at no charge. You can tell if it was completed by lookiing for the air scoops that were added to the top of the engine area. Six speeds vs. five. Running range at 3500 rpm instead of 5500 rpm for the 998's.
Good luck in your hunt.

Well, sir I think you hit the nail on the head when referencing price. Resale is also a consideration. Used prices are high at the moment. Would you get a reasonable return on resale of a 998? when the newer models have significant improvements. And even the 1300s have been around a while. Thanks for your comment.

resale not as good on the 998's. Improvements are the culprit. I have seen 08 and 09 going for $6K. Many of the later 998's are for sale on this site. Most are priced at current high prices and some are being sold. An ad with 500 reads and no bites, usually indicates the seller is asking to much. The readers here are well informed when it comes to a good deal or not. Caveat Emptor. (Buyer beware).

I was trying not to blurt out what I was thinking. The point I was trying to make was for me going cheap to see "if I liked it" made better since/cents than putting out a lot of $'s and not liking it. At least I wouldn't and didn't loose when I upgraded from a 12 to a 2016.

Of the V Twin Spyder RT series, it is often considered the 2012 is the best of that type.
Regarding the 1330 powered Spyder RT series, many folks are on board that the 2014 model year RTS and RT Limiteds are proving most reliable and trouble free with many at or over 100,000 miles.
