James Thorne, next time you pull a sprocket / pulley, can you check if Rotax used a wear collar between the pulley and the output shaft bearing inner race.

Typically, manufacturers do not have the gearbox output shaft seal ride directly on the gearbox shaft. Most times a collar is slid over the shaft, sometimes using a small o ring to prevent leaks, that allows the seal to wear into the easily replaced collar.

If there is a collar, one would expect it to be made longer rather than install a washer.

Regardless, the pulley bolt merely keeps it from falling off the shaft. The splines provide the torque interface for motion.

When you pull the sprocket, you can see the face of the shaft seal. Its rubber faced. From the parts breakdown, the bearing is right behind that seal. The sprocket rides against the shoulder on the shaft, it does not touch the seal. Adding a collar will space the sprocket outward by the thickness of the collar. You are correct that the bolt, sprocket, shaft clamping has little to do with torque transfer or to keep the sprocket from moving on the shaft. That is the splines and the new collar will not change the play between the splines and therefore the fretting issue.

    .

A friend in our Battle Born Spyder group just had her F3 in the shop AGAIN for the sprocket fix.( first sprocket failed about 2 yrs ago) Now waiting for parts. BRP and CanAm needs to stop making the sprockets out of cheese AND solve this problem quickly as their reputation for quality and reliability may spread to their other products.

I did not realize that BRP had a reputation for quality and reliability, or integrity for that matter. They really do not have a reputation for solving problems quickly.

In response to Fritz above about reliability, quality, and integrity--------
Just look up D.E.S.S, front sprockets, Kenda tires, switch gear, drain plugs, belt vibration, and I could go on and on. I haven't had all those problems with my but if we took all the forum members who did have reliability, quality, and integrity problems it would be a LARGE percentage.

Not attacking you Fritz........ just stating the obvious.

I'm not so sure about this ...... I've read 99% of the threads / posts about this and I recall someone posting that the last Month of 2014 production had a couple of Red Dust issues ..... and these would be covered by the re-call ..... JMHO .... Mike

I stopped by my local dealer Saturday (happened to be the annual "Block Party at Kent Powersports, San Antonio, TX) and had a chance to talk with the service manager about the front sprocket safety recall. Here's what I learned. My 2015 RT-S will be inspected tomorrow (about 30 minutes). If there is visible excessive wear/damage a new sprocket will be installed as a stop gap while awaiting replacement parts from BRP. According to the manager that can be expected in January some time. Not a very good response by BRP to a federal government recall, but at least this dealership appears to be taking a proactive approach to the problem.

Has anyone else heard anything different? It would be interesting to know.

... I talked with my Spyder Dealer and learned that they are waiting for some parts to come. No real answers yet about when they will get the parts. Still waiting...

I ordered one in July or August (after the announcement of the recall) and received it. Can't say they are available "today' but they have been available post recall announcement for sure.

I got my spyder (2019 Rt Ltd) from the shop with the warranty repair. It snowed last night so no riding today, but It drove off the trailer last night and up into my garage.

    Freemont Motorsports in Florence Co.
    Dropped off August 13, 2022
    Picked up November 10, 2022

My sprocket was a complete failure. Lost all power to the rear wheel as I pulled onto the highway during a multi day ride. Engine Revved, loud noise but no power. I have a stinger trailer so I was able to tow it home from Durango to the shop.

Here's the sprocket. Very small ridges left on the inside. The mechanic was supposed to get pictures of the shaft but forgot. They said it looked fine with no serious wear.
    20221110_151713-M.jpg

Here's a video of what it sounded like. The bike is in gear, brake is off. Revving gives no power.

Side note - Mechanic received the part last week but when they went to install it, the box actually contained a water pump. So I actually got the part destined for the next guy (Sorry about that) which arrived a few days later. I guess BRP still doesn't have their act in gear.

That is exactly what my dealer (RideNow in Peoria AZ) did to mine back in June. Saved my riding season for me.

I'm not trying to be too negative here but I cannot imagine there is no damage to the output shaft with that pulley in that condition. Especially after revving it a few times like you did in that video. Hopefully you have a good mechanic who is being completely honest with you.

That's the whole problem with mechanics. You have to trust that what they are telling you is the truth because "Insurance won't allow customers into the shop to see for themselves". But in this case, I don't think they have any incentive to lie about it. If the shaft was damaged, they said it would be repaired under the recall. Still, it broke after only 2 years and 16K miles, so the sprocket was really soft to wear down that quick.

Has anyone produced a video about how to do your own check on the sprocket? I guess it's not too bad to pull a bit of tupperware and it's just right there.

I've been busy and haven't been on SpyderLovers in awhile, so I was hoping to get on today and find good news on this topic. Why? because at approx 50K miles, my first sprocket failed, and then at approx 68K miles the second sprocket also failed and my spyder has been in the shop since mid October waiting for parts. I spoke to them earlier this week and they said that they had received the parts for the "final fix" on the recall and that it should be ready for me this week. Based on that conversation I scheduled my husband's recall fix for later this month. They called me yesterday to say mine was done so I rode it home (brrrrr!). I also asked my "regular" service contact about whether this was the "final fix" and he confirmed that's what he'd heard as well. He also said that the fix was to replace the sprocket. I replied that "this is my third... not sure I really trust that". Not much he could say in response other than agree. I guess time will tell. I was hoping to get on today and have a lot of others saying how they'd also gotten their recall issue resolved. I guess not
