Default Anybody know what the consistent hum coming from engine is?

I'm hearing a consistent hum from the engine (2014 RT). Everything seems to be running fine... engine performance is normal... but this hum is not normal. It does it while moving or in idle. It's pitched similar to the G note on a keyboard and doesn't vary up or down (pitch) with RPM's. Any body know what I'm talking about?

Question Is the hum something new?

    When did it start?

Fuel pump is most likely source.

My Spyder mechanic said that noise is the fuel pump. My bike was a 2014 RTL.

Very common fuel pump sound. Some have been successful having it replaced under warranty but mostly it is just considered by most dealers to be "normal". Irritating sound and expensive to replace..... Jim

I have not heard of marvel mystery oil. I have tried some fuel additives but that hasn't made any difference.
Where can I find Marvel Mystery Oil. And is it recommended as a fuel additive? After that first tank (with the oil in it) was gone, did the "hum" return? Thanks

I believe I first heard about it in my teens, over 60 years ago. Always thought of it as another one of those "snake oil" cures for every engine ill imaginable! But, maybe it's good stuff. I've never used it. I just looked at their website. Next year will be their 100th anniversary, so if nothing else you have to give them credit for business longevity!

I am a big fan of Marvel, I use it on a lot of things, it's a good lubricant for squeaks and all kinds of stuff!! But good luck on this fuel pump item, I find it hard to believe that it will be the cure all for this issue, it will mix into the gas like a two-stroke oil and lubricate any exposed bearings, but it will wash out after the next tank of gas!!

Be careful with adding oil to the gas, the cat (if you still have it) can get get clogged up if too much oil is run thru. A little would probably be ok.

my 2014 RTs had a noisey fuel pump. I considered replacing the fuel pump, but tried some marvel mystery oil first. It only took one treatment and the noise has not returned. It has been many thousands of miles. Read the instructions for how much to add to a tank of gas. website says 4 ounces for 10 gallons of gas. I seem to remember adding a capfull or 2. It is amazing stuff

Well, I tried the Mystery Oil (in a couple tanks) and it hasn't changed the "hum". Most every one who has commented on my description of the "hum" (as I call it) thinks it's probably the fuel pump. And that sounds logical to me since the sound is consistent (which would be consistent with an electric pump ... not like old mechanical pumps which could change with RPMs)
    Any other ideas welcomed.
    Thanks

When you first start it, and let it warm up is it humming then, or is it humming when you put it in gear and start riding? It could be your compressor pump for your air bag! It will kick into pump mode when the bikes put into gear, if it's calling for air.
