    Terrible news and everyone saw it coming. No leaders with the balls to do something about it ahead of time for a deterrent.

    I am not a fan of Putin but I understand his issue. Ukraine is the only buffer between the east/west and if they join NATO like they want to, Russia has "the enemy" on their doorstep. No different than when USSR put missiles in Cuba or if our 'enemy' moved into Mexico or Canada.

    Hopefully, this will not spread to other western countries assuming Ukraine falls.

    We have to open our spigots along with an organized plan of sanctions with our allies. Unlike the past we need to plan for the unlikely and unexpected - a widening war and cyber attacks.

    I agree. AND the opening of ALL our energy spigots so we regain our energy independence and eventually become the leading exporter of energy. Right now energy is Gold and will be so every time there is a crisis! We NEED to control the Energy!!!! No matter what your political belief you don't want to be standing in line for hours with a 2 gallon ration can?

    Just saw this posted on one of my FB pages. Quite interesting ..

    For those who ask: “Why does Ukraine matter? “
    This is why Ukraine matters.
    It is the second largest country by area in Europe by area and has a population
    of over 40 million - more than Poland.
    Ukraine ranks:
    1st in Europe in proven recoverable reserves of uranium ores;
    2nd place in Europe and 10th place in the world in terms of titanium ore reserves;
    2nd place in the world in terms of explored reserves of manganese ores (2.3 billion tons, or 12% of the world's reserves);
    2nd largest iron ore reserves in the world (30 billion tons);
    2nd place in Europe in terms of mercury ore reserves;
    3rd place in Europe (13th place in the world) in shale gas reserves (22 trillion cubic meters)
    4th in the world by the total value of natural resources;
    7th place in the world in coal reserves (33.9 billion tons)
    Ukraine is an important agricultural country:
    1st in Europe in terms of arable land area;
    3rd place in the world by the area of black soil (25% of world's volume);
    1st place in the world in exports of sunflower and sunflower oil;
    2nd place in the world in barley production and 4th place in barley exports;
    3rd largest producer and 4th largest exporter of corn in the world;
    4th largest producer of potatoes in the world;
    5th largest rye producer in the world;
    5th place in the world in bee production (75,000 tons);
    8th place in the world in wheat exports;
    9th place in the world in the production of chicken eggs;
    16th place in the world in cheese exports.
    Ukraine can meet the food needs of 600 million people.
    Ukraine is an important industrialised country:
    1st in Europe in ammonia production;
    Europe's 2nd’s and the world’s 4th largest natural gas pipeline system;
    3rd largest in Europe and 8th largest in the world in terms of installed capacity of nuclear power plants;
    3rd place in Europe and 11th in the world in terms of rail network length (21,700 km);
    3rd place in the world (after the U.S. and France) in production of locators and locating equipment;
    3rd largest iron exporter in the world
    4th largest exporter of turbines for nuclear power plants in the world;
    4th world's largest manufacturer of rocket launchers;
    4th place in the world in clay exports
    4th place in the world in titanium exports
    8th place in the world in exports of ores and concentrates;
    9th place in the world in exports of defence industry products;
    10th largest steel producer in the world (32.4 million tons).
    Ukraine matters. That is why its independence is important to the rest of the world.

    Albert Einstein said it best.
    There are only two things that are infinite.
    The universe and human stupidity.
    And I am not sure about the universe.

    With missles the way they are does it matter who's on your door step ? Technology has made the world much smaller. Don't like the situation in the Ukraine at all. Can't imagine bombs falling on your own city.

    Today the old way of engaging in war is for the most part over. Our world is too dependent on technology so to speak. Simply cyber attack a country at the right time and disrupt their ability to produce food for one season, and you'll have them on the ropes and ready for takeover. Empty bellies will create mass chaos. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Didn't mean it that way (going to use missles). Only meant it in relation to some of the above comments about buffer zones and a close enemy.

    Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it:

    Munich Agreement
    29 September 1938 - 30 September 1938

    Britain, France, Italy and Germany were all delegates at the Munich agreement. The terms were that Czechoslovakia should give the Sudetenland to Germany and that Poland should have Teschen and Hungary have Ruthenia. Germany marched into the Sudetenland unopposed on the 1st October 1938.
    Both Britain and France were unprepared for war and still haunted by the horrors of World War 1 and therefore gave Hitler the Sudetenland. This was the final piece of appeasement before the Second World War. The vulnerability and timidness of USSR, Britain and France to stand up to Germany led to the taking of the Sudetenland and in turn to the outbreak of War in March 1939.

    —————————————————-

    Ukraine is today’s Sudetenland. Either the free world stands NOW, or it’s time to start learning to speak Russian.
