I don't know about using Diesel fuel as a substitute for what I buy - which # 2 Fuel oil ...... Folks who don't have buried tanks or have them in a warm basement use Kerosene, because it doesn't GEL at colder temps..... but it is more $ than #2, so it's not widely used .... too expensive ...... The upcoming cold winter and very expensive home heating oil will have many folks in touch with others to stay warm.
If the diesel fuel does deplete, $10 per gallon gasoline will be on the horizon.

If people generally will voluntarily adjust their lifestyles to use less fossil fuels, the worst of this impending disaster can be averted.

.
I guess all the millions that heat their homes with oil will have to wear their fur coats when they can't afford to heat their homes. And less than half ( about 46%) of that barrel of oil is refined to gasoline. The diesel and heating fuel make up another 25%. Where do we get asphalt to build and repair roads. That 42 gal. barrel of oil has lots of products that most people don't know about. Plastics and even medicines come to mind. Even make-up.
I'm sure that millions of people have already adjusted their lifestyles. I have, though not voluntary.....

Drove by a few gas stations today on the way to the beach, pretty much $3.09 to $3.21 for 87 octane. While not as low as it was 2 years ago, still seems a lot less expensive than other areas of the USA.

Filled up today at just under $6 a gallon. I live too close to California. In Washoe county we pay plenty of fuel tax and our roads are still poorly maintained. 45 cents per gallon and that's just one governmental entity that taxes the fuel.

At that cost, yes, I would buy an electric car. Almost $3.00 more per gallon is nuts. FWIW, we pay similar tax on gasoline, so not sure what your tax dollars are being spent on.

But, no income tax, I believe. Government operating expenses need to be paid from taxes and fees of one kind or another.

Cannot believe you guys are complaining about the fuel prizes. Pay 2,20 to 2.30 euro per liter at the moment for E5/ E98 petrol (the Netherlands). As far as I am concerned it is still really cheap what you pay for gas.

Reality is going to bite us hard sooner or later, just as it has with Britain recently.

When you consider that our country has the capability to not need to import oil from other countries, having that resource induces lower prices.
No doubt China does not import Fortune Cookies, so they would certainly pay less.
Same with drinking water, and many other resources. When a country has the resource, and ability to effectively utilize it for their own citizens, the cost should be less.
