Default Looking for gently used RT SE6. What year?

Sold my Harley.. My hands don't work so well anymore so I'm looking for a Spyder.. What year between 2015 and 2019 would you recommend? Price is main consideration.
    Thanks
    Dwight

2014 was the year of the DESS problems.

If price is the big consideration....2015 would be your year. RT's from then on are not on anyone's "don't buy" list that I know of.

Currently Owned: 2019 F3 Limited, 2020 F3 Limited: SOLD BOTH LIMITEDS in October of 2023.

    Previously : 2008 GS-SM5 (silver), 2009 RS-SE5 (red), 2010 RT-S Premier Editon #474 (black) 2011 RT A&C SE5 (magnesium) 2014 RTS-SE6 (yellow)

MY FINAL TALLY: 7 Spyders, 15 years, 205,500 miles

IT HAS BEEN A LONG, WONDERFUL, AND FUN RIDE.

I would suggest you find the newest 1330 with the lowest miles in your price range. You can go back as far 2014. Do you know enough about Spyders to know which model you want? There are basic F3 models with low miles in the 12-14000 price range. I think the F3 started in 2015. Good luck on your search, be patient, haunt your local "for sale" sites, tell all your friends what you are looking for. Do you have any used bike stores in your area, tell them what you want?

Mine is NOT for sale, but I’ve owned it now for 6 1/2 years, have just under 60,000 kms on it and have NEVER experienced the DESS problem, soooo I don’t think that you should lump all 2014’s having a DESS problem. I know that there were a few that had the problem, but I’d guess the more of them did not. jmho

Yes 14 had that issue and 15 also ..... however it was an easy and in-expensive DIY repair ( $140.00 for the new module ) ..... In 2018 BRP switched to a different instrument panel along with the Audio .... And this did not make it better IMHO ..... I wouldn't buy any Spyder from 18 and up. ... Improving the sound ( quality & volume ) was easy () ON 14-17 models ) using after-market speakers and keeping the stock radio .... good luck .... Mike

If we didn't already have our 2014 RT, I would be all over this deal on a pearl white RT in central Texas.

I feel exactly the opposite. I wouldn't buy anything older than an '18 because of the digital dash. In fact I wouldn't buy anything older than a '20 because of the full led light package. Different strokes for different folks.

    Default Spyder

    2015, 2016 or 2017? Well I enjoy my 2016 RT LIMITED.

This was my first Spyder and I purchased it 11/2016.
I had enjoy riding on 2 wheels and finally needed to change over to the Spyder.

My choice for you would be a 2016 RT/RTL. .....

Look at your budget and make sure you get what is best for you. Take some time and do your homework. ...... : )

    Exclamation Talk to Willie

Dwight -- more information on Willie's Spyder at CycleTrader https://www.cycletrader.com/listing/...SE6-5019282524

Here's my experience: I purchased a 2014 RT-S SE6 with 77K miles and RT-622 trailer in San Diego, CA for $9K. Because I was the 3rd owner and the 2nd owner seemed to be a pass-through only, I didn't have a service history. So I established a maintenance baseline for everything. I could afford to do this because I had a workshop, tools, skills and dexterity.

The 1330cc Rotax engine is a sweetie; the 6-speed transmission shifts are usually smooth now that I'm using Motul 7100 15W-50; and the cornering was treacherous until I replaced the tires then was concerning until I replaced the shocks although I still have to repair the air suspension. Now at 85K miles it's the freeway runner I wanted and more importantly needed.

My only "lifetime" concern is the clutch wear because apparently the 1st owner took long 2-up rides with the trailer in the Southwest. When I changed the oil (I did it three times before reaching happiness with Motul) it was black although no sparklies in the drain pan or jaggies on the magnetic drain plugs. I'm not getting any slippage but I've studied the service manual and I think I can replace the clutch plates without removing the engine from the chassis.

The point of my story is talk to Willie. I expect his Spyder received TLC over it's 106K miles and you can ask him yourself, something not available to me. I also expect that like me, your worst-case "remediation" issues will be the air suspension and the clutch. Willie's price leaves you plenty of headroom for both, especially if you and a friend can perform the work.

PS Grip Puppies and Show Chrome handlebar weights will keep your hands happier!

    Default Spyder or Ryker???

Just wanted you to have a second option.
Check out the Ryker for a possibility.
They are good for the first time 3 wheelers.
You can get a used or a new Ryker, what ever you like.

People on this Forum have done this route.
First a Ryker and then traded for a Spyder.

Again do what you can afford. ....

If you are looking for a more touring related spyder, I would go with anything from 2014 RT up. Right now there are 2 great deals in my area for under $14k. One is a 2015 and the other is a 2014. Anything older that 2 years old will probably not have a warranty, unless they purchased an extended warranty. For that reason, I would look to the standard dash (2014-17) and not the digital. If you go up in year, I would look into getting one that might still have some extended warranty. Good Luck.

I too, was the owner of a 2014 RT-S. I also NEVER had a problem with DESS issues on mine. We traded it off in 2020 with 45,000 miles to purchase a 2020 F3L. Someone got a good 2014 there. Would I buy a 2014 again, yes, but I would check the service history for DESS issues.

Thank you sir. We bought a new 2010 RT and loved it, however it didn't show us much love. Warranty repair 7 times during our ownership. We sold it with 16k miles and bought our present Harley. I installed a trike kit on it. Were older and probably won't be doing anymore long trips. Most of our riding buddies have aged out. It appears that the newer 3 cylinder models are better. 15, 16, and 17's appear to be the ones that would work well for us. The RT's are what we are interested in. Kansas by the way.
