Default I added a usb/voltmeter to the middle blank port in dash.

This was a much more challenging process than I expected..! I had to remove the panel that the fog light, parking brake, heated grips & hi/lo compressor setting was to install it. Unplugging those electrical switches then reinstalling them was a challenge to say the least. Then the center blank needed to be cut to fit my usb/volt meter.
I hope to never have to get into that area again ..! Geeze …! Talk about a tight fit.

No, just be careful and follow instructions, and don't remove too much material. There's an excellent video (youtube) on the instal on this site.

No fuse and I went keyed power. I took power off one of the dash gauges, I don't remember which one. I have 2 USB ports in mine and I mainly use one to charge my phone. 3.5 amps I believe. Not much at all.

I went straight to the battery with an in-line fuse. But I did add a toggle switch to be able to turn it off when the bike is not running.

I got my power from the keyed second GPS line behind the fuel tank. Only required taking tupperware off the right side. I installed a dual USB with volt meter.

Good video. He made it look pretty easy. If I made a video demonstrating how I did it it would be rated PG-13 and taken a much longer amount of time to finish ..!

You could try a USB angle adapter as this may be easier to connect items to it and less strain on the cable
There are different USB angles available - Found this on e bay maybe Amazon has them as well

Do your handlebars hit on the USB plug when in use?
I'm looking at putting one in my 16 RTL.
Don't really want to use a USB angle adapter.
