Got a Spare key for early Spyders!
Anybody looking to get a spare key for their 2008 to 2013, google a ZD23RT5 key. It was not available for a while, but just got 2 blanks from ekeyblanks.com and had Ace hardware cut and clone a spare key. This one cost me $20.00 for key blank and $4.00 to get it cut. They did not charge for cloning.

Those are chipped keys he is describing. I too have the Ilco keys. I got them to use for saddlebags, but since DESS has been disabled they will start my bike too.

When you say that Ace cloned your new key, does that mean it will start your Spyder?

Yes they as well as a locksmith can clone the key to start your bike.

Yes, but just in case you're not fully aware know this.
The clone process programs the key chip to look exactly like the BRP key used for the cloning process. So it doesn't matter which of the two keys you use, the DESS sees them as the same key. Now, if you ever lose both BRP keys and don't have a backup clone you are in deep doo doo. In order to program the DESS to accept new keys you must have two or more, max 8, keys, each with a different code. If you lose all but one key, BRP or clone, you cannot program new keys into the DESS unless you have at least one new BRP key(s). If you have multiple clone keys, all cloned from the same BRP key, they, plus the BRP used for cloning, count as one key. New BRP keys come with a unique code already programmed. New clone keys discussed above have no code programmed in.
For ultimate backup safety get two clones made, one from each BRP key, and always leave one key, BRP or clone, home.
All this applies to 2013 and earlier Spyders. I don't believe anyone on this forum has been able to crack the algorithm used for programming 2014 and later BRP keys and so have not been able to come up with a way to clone them.
