Build date is 05/2020, selling as a 2021 model?
Ok, I am in the process of buying a “New” 2021 RTL! Build date I was given is 05/2020, would that not make it a 2020 model, not a 2021 model?

The MY 2021 RTs and F3s (plural, not F3S) have two build date categories, those built before and after Sept 2020; however, I believe the MY 2021 vehicles were announced well after May 2020. The MY 2020 Spyders had only one build date category. It smells to me like a lying salesman is pegging the BS meter. What I would do were I in your boots is to require the stealership to provide you with written proof by VIN from BRP of the MY. The issue may be somewhat moot if the Spyder is being set up from a crate and as such has a put in service date of when the deal is consummated, which begins your two year manufacturer's warranty and establishes the date before which you must purchase a B.E.S.T. extended warranty should you opt to do so. OTOH, when you decide to sell the vehicle the official MY will affect the trade in and asking prices regardless of when it was actually manufactured.

otherwise be a vulgar brawl.

The MSO should tell you what the year model is. Ask the dealer to see that. They should have one for every new vehicle on their lot.

The parts catalog for the 2021 Spyders, both RT and F3, show their parts breakdowns as "built before September 2020" and "built after September 2020". The Ryker is not split into before and after. There was a thread about this several weeks ago and someone said it had to do with Canadian laws related to vehicle manufacturing.
My guess is in the early phase of Covid-19 the design and supply of parts got bamboozled to such an extent that the planned 2021 part changes could not be implemented until after May 2020, that BRP was compelled to keep building Spyders to meet demand, and the law said they had to be labeled 2021 MY.

I gather that MSO stands for “Manufacturers Statement of Origin”? and if so, it would be much the same as Canada’s
N.V.I.S. which is “New Vehicle Information Statement” . A new vehicle CANNOT be registered and licensed without it. The new vehicle comes to the dealer with the N.I.V.S. (MSO) directly from BRP.

Also, in this thread https://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/...ght=early+2021 Supercrawler discusses the issue of his 2021 RT not being labeled for California emissions. Apparently the required paperwork had not been available to submit to CA, which requires new paperwork for each MY, so BRP had to put a non-CA emissions label on the early 2021s.

The model year vs year of build is why the 10th anniversary of the Spyder was celebrated in 2017 even though the first MY of Spyders was 2008.

Ok, bike was in a crate, once I dealt with all the paper work, Imotorsports put it together. I am now waiting… for a delivery date! Will check on MSO next week, shop closed Sunday/Monday.

In most cases it’s always 1/2 year before. For example I literally just received my 2022 sled 3 weeks ago. It’s still 2021 right now. Not uncommon. There is only one time I remember a .5. In 2020 the 600 was introduced in January. They called it the 2020.5 that year instead of 2021. Being so close to 2022 and you buying a 2021 so late it’s been in crate for over a year half. Makes sense to me. 2022 can be ordered right now and are in production now for next spring sales.

Last April I was in the market for an aluminum trailer to tow my trike on. Very hard to find due to supply chain back-ups. The 1st of May my local dealer got a limited supply in and they had 1 that was exactly what I wanted. It had the year 2022 on the MSO and is now titled and registered as a 2022 model. So, I own a trailer from the future.....?

Always nice to see what the future would be like! Enjoy your new trailer. I am in discussion with BRP and should get an answer today, guy has been great! Thanks for your response.

My wife's '17 RT-S has a build date of 05/2016. As I have been inside, I have noticed the date code tags on various items. Most of them are dated around 12 MAY 2016, so I gather that the bike was assembled during the third or fourth week of May. Yes, it's one of the first few 2017 Spyders assembled. Looking at the VIN, after all the usual alphabet soup, are the digits 000055.

From what I read, ALL 2010 model Honda GL1800s were built before January 2010. Then they closed the factory and auctioned/shipped equipment.

That sounds reasonable as there was no 2011 Goldwing MY. Honda skipped 2011 while they moved production from Ohio to a new factory in Japan.

l just looked at the build date on my 2014 RT. It is 06/2014. I wonder when did BRP move up the MY transition month from June, or later, to May.

Yes, looked at my 2020 F3 I’m trading in, build date is 03/2020, which makes sense. Waiting on information on the MOS on the 2021 RTL. Build date 05/2020, I have bought, a little concerned about time in crate, year and a half? Any thoughts?

The MY is easy to see, it’s the tenth digit from the left on your VIN. An L would be 2020 and an M would be 2021. This digit is what all the Blue Books will use to determine the year; but when you order parts, sometimes you will be asked for the rest of the VIN bc that will show the numerical order it was built in as they can change parts in the middle of a production run. My 17 RT was built in May of 16.

I bought my 19 RTL from iMotorsports. The MSO is included in the packet of paperwork that will be sent to you after the sale is complete. The document evidences the transfer of the vehicle from BRP to the dealer to you, and was notarized by someone at iMotorsports. The MSO was necessary for me to get my registration and title from DMV.
Fortunately the 2019 models did not have an issue with the California emissions certification label. I confirmed online that the 2019 RT had been certified by CARB before I started the purchase process. All 2019 RTs met 50-state emissions levels.
Good luck!

Update: just received the MOS from the bank that financed the bike, this is a 2021 Spyder RT Limited, build date 05/2020! Imotorsports sent me a text stating it was shipped today from Chicago. No ETA yet, but hope to be riding this next week! Thanks for all your input!
