Electric Brake Controller - any ideas on how to add?
Hi.
I have a 2021 RT with Pierre's hitch and harness. https://www.canamspyderaccessories.c...-play-harness/
Any idea on how to add an electronic Brake Controller?
I am towing a 350lb trailer but thinking I may want to hook one up.
All help appreciated.

I would google " trailer brakes " and look at what the major parts suppliers have .... also check for what they have listed for RV stuff .... Mike
Your towing a 350 lb trailer, that's close to the maximum allowable tow weight. I checked the operator's manual (pg. 81) and this is the info. TOWING SPECIFICATIONS
Maximum weight on trailer tongue: 18 kg (40 lb)
Maximum towed weight (trailer and cargo) 182 kg (400 lb)
NOTE: For information about the maximum cargo that can be loaded in trailer, refer to the CAN-AM FREEDOM TRAILER OPERATOR'S GUIDE.

This might be a dumb question but does your trailer have brakes?
My Trailer (HELIO HE3) has the 7 way connector with electric brakes. I installed hitch and harness from Pierre’s CanAmAccessories, and just used a 4 to 7 way trailer adapter. I plugged the CURT Brake controller in-between and it worked fantastic.

The reason for the 400 lb. weight limit doesn't have to do with the Spyder PULLING that much weight .... it has to do with Slowing and Stopping. I have stated for years that the Spyder is capable of towing more weight ....IF you equip the trailer with Brakes ..... Mike

Reason: toeing = towing ;-)

I see you have a commercial trailer ( Helio HE3S ) and it is equipped with Brakes .... I don't understand why it didn't come with a Brake controller ???? .... thanks Mike

Mike, brake controllers are typically purchased by the driver of the tow vehicle, not sold as part of a trailer package
Recommended trailer limits of 40/400 I'm sure are liability driven. I've seen here and on the road where those limits have been exceeded by a great degree. I've researched electric brakes and by the time you've purchased all the needed parts, you'll likely have squeezed all there is out of 1K. Then, all you have to do is put it all together. All in all, if you're intending on packing more than the recommended weight, investing 1K to avoid an unforeseen TC would be well worth it.
I replaced the entire axle with a new torsion axle with brakes for just under $500.00. Four bolts hold it onto the frame, so a very easy swap and well worth it! As Mike said, the pulling capibility of the spyder is very good, it was the stopping that concerned me, Especially when riding two up fully loaded towing the Aspen camper.
I have always said it answer to the question " will my (insert vehicle here) tow my trailer? The question is will my (insert vehicle here) stop my trailer. Going is optional stopping is mandetory.

I didnt order it on line. Living in MI just a short distance from Elkhart IN where a large majority of travel trailers are made, I drove down there and had an axle made.
Here is their info.

I just went back and looked and I purchased that axle in 2014, rated at 500 pounds with brakes for $280.00.
Here is some good info that they sent to me.
Do not get an axle rated at to high of a load because when a torsion axle is not fully loaded the torsion arm is not rotated to its normal position which puts the brake assembly out of level. This out of level condition can result in unexpected brake actuation when the trailer encounters large bumps. This can occur because the magnet has sufficient mass to move the actuating lever during extreme jounce situations. That being said if you want a brake axle with a 500 pound rating, it would run $280 plus shipping. Karen

Did the new axle with brakes add much weight to the trailer overall?
And electric brakes on the trailer? What trailer is it?
Really curious now!
Yes I have a 7 way on my spyder. I charge the batteries in the trailer as I ride, then have led lights, a fa⁷n, and the ability to charge my phones and headsets at night

Help, I can't get the controller to blue tooth. Doesn't respond when I press the brake
I have the Techonsha 90250. When I go through the steps to Bluetooth, the handheld doesn't respond when I press the brake pedal. Advice would be great. I have repeatedly followed the steps in the manual, and some more using a YouTube vid.

Reason: Many don't get to see individual Post titles, just the Thread title! :-/
