From Kingman I40 exit 53 to Crookton I40 exit 139, I have never seen a burro.
    Probably 100 trips from 2001 to 2021 and maybe 50+ trips 1994-1997.

But many burros a few miles before and after Oatman (red map marker), in the surrounding mountains.
The Oatman Highway is less traveled than Kingmanto Crookton.
It has some steep winding areas. When I travel there, I think about my grandparents traveling over that road circa 1920, probably in Model Ts coming from Texas (fraternal) and Tennessee (maternal).

This satellite map better indicates the type of road.
If you enjoy history, read about the Oatman family encounter with the Yavapai (possibly Mojave) tribe.

If it's paved or hard-pack, I'll play. RT don't like 2-track (or 1-track for that matter!).

It is paved, although rough in some areas the last time I went over Oatman Highway.

This area is rich in native American history. Yavapai were active until about 1875.

AeroPilot, is that the 8 mile section east of Yarnall?
US 66 from Crookton (exit 139) to Kingman is 90 miles and only 17 miles farther than I40.

Until about a year or so ago, the route 66 emblem was painted at Crookton. A lot of tour buses stopped there for photos.
Probably too many taken mid-highway, so now painted over.

I just returned from a trip across the upper US to Yellowstone (13 days early June). Hit most of the attractions along the way once in SD and westward. Didn't do Crazy Horse or Pikes Peak but got in Badlands, Beartooth, Needles, Deadwood, Old Faithful and Million $ Hwy in the 6100 mi loop. Averaged 470mi/day. Temps from 50 to 102.

Do you plan to camp or motel?
How fast and long (hours) do you ride? I have been with too many groups where 2 or more riders becomes a race which is not for me.
I'm not pokey but like to enjoy the sites and take photos too.
Count me as a definite maybe. I can meet the group in Chi town.
    Cheers,
We might be interested also as this trip develops if tag alongs are welcome. We have talked about this trip for years and never got it done. We prefer motels and not in a footrace to get there - both retired and want to smell the roses along the way.

Please let us know if a group thing comes together.

HI Ray. that sound like a fun trip. I am really interested in Pike's Peak and Crazy Horse, if there is more on the way, then great! Just trying to get this trip on better footing, I know it's early and some one asked can any one join in; all are welcome as far as I am concerned - I just want to ride.

I'm up in Wyoming and thinking about meeting up with the group in New Mexico somewhere to ride on to California . I would be pulling a trailer and camping.

I just received a copy of my AAA VIA magazine.
It has an article on Route 66 that I have yet to read.
It covers NM to CA with lots of sites detailed.
I hope the stars align and the rtip comes together for all of us.

If you're going to do Pike's Peak it's a shame to miss Mt. Evans Scenic Byway, the highest paved road in North America. Did 'em both in '19.

Pikes Peak has been on my route for the last 2 long tours. In 2019 it was closed due to snow (early June). In 2021 it was closed because the visitor center wasn't completed yet (mid-June). Maybe have better luck with Mt. Evans!

Went all the way to the top in September 2021 and Center was opened tho some construction was still going on in the parking lot.

I would think Pike's Peak and Crazy Horse and other destinations would work great on the way home when route 66 is done.
