    Question Fans running a lot??

    .

So here we are, 200 miles from home, at a biker rally in Winnemucca, Nv.

And the fans run a lot.. Checked the coolant level and added maybe 2 cups of water. Didn't Help.

    Any thoughts???

Only a thought, lots of bugs in radiators?

    .

Checked that also and they are clear. Momorn Crickets are out in droves but a good inspection of the screens and radiator show clear. A bad relay or sensor perhaps??
The fans are not constantly on but more than in the past. I'm puzzled.
The Spyder ran fine and showed NO signs of overheating.

Yes and yes. Even checked the oil level properly and as always--- it's where it was 3,500 miles ago

Maybe I'm just being a worry wart but the has been so good ( Perfect) for years this fan situation had me concerned.

    Thanks for nor responses.

How about the ambient temp? It has been extremely hot here so early in the season and my temp gauge reads just a bit higher than it has thus far this year and my fans have come on a bit more frequently but not excessively so given the slightly higher temp gauge reading. I too checked the cold coolant level and it was right on the cold line.

Ambient temps in low to mid 80s . Took the out later after checking everything and all seemed fine. I just don't know.

You may want to poke around the water pump and see if you have any signs of fluid dripping out the weep hole, just for kicks!! Good luck

Cap tightening worked for us when Linda's heated up at the Grove OK Rally in Oct 2019. Ann and Joe helped take care of that one.

It could happen to have the fans running like that with the temps in the 80's. If it wasn't over heating I wouldn't worry to much about but just keep a eye on it.

Mine turn on while I am riding at times too. More so in slow traffic too.

    Thanks in advance,

Coolant Temperature sensor is on the left side of the engine. Looks like somewhere around the middle of the engine from the picture.

If you have BUDS you can check that to your gauge too and if they match the sensor is probably good.

There is a OHM test of the sensor too.

Seriously overheated ( by the temp gage) over in the Gold Country of Cal. Hi temps, fluctuating gauge , fans running alot. Added some water ( not much though). Long tow home ( thank goodness for AAA Premium)

No smoke or steam, no leaks visible, no loss of power.

    Going into the shop

After a 30 mile ride on the highway yesterday, my 5 day old Spyder F3 had the fan running as the rig was idling outside my garage. Outside temperature was 12 C (about 55 F), so outside heat not an issue. I assume this is a normal occurrence.

Bummer. Is there anything else you can check out in the meantime, like the water pump and sensor?

Any fluids underneath the bike? Probably not but thought I'd ask.

How many miles on the bike? Just curious.

ENGINE OVERHEATING 1. Low coolant level. - Refill and check for leaks (coolant leaking out of engine leak indicator hole, hoses or clamps missing/defective, cylinder head gaskets leaks, ride plate leaking, etc.). Repair or replace. 2. Air in cooling system - Refill and bleed cooling system. - Check bleeding nozzles in water pump module and cylinder head if they are clogged. 3. Thermostat defective (does not open when engine gets hot) - Replace water pump module. 4. Water pump failure - Inspect water pump drive gears. - Inspect and replace defective components. 5. Water temperature sensor defective - Check or replace. Refer to ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION (EFI). 6. Radiator or hoses damaged - Check or replace damaged components. 7. Internal passage blocked in cooling system - Inspect and clean.

Took that out of the manual

Maybe Thermostat or pump or sensor??

    Any codes?

It sounds to me like the old fashioned thermostat is stuck being the mostly likely culprit.

    ........ So....
No codes, no puddles, no leaking fluid. Poked around to try and find the sensor today. I'll raise her up and see if I can get at it from the bottom. I thought the thermostat was built into the water pump as one unit---- hopefully not. Can the water pump be replaced from the side????

    Thanks all.
