The Red Dust of Death - front pulley
Well it just happened to us today.Riding along at 68 mph ,heard a clang noise and no more tranny.Bike wont shift at all.Had to call a tow truck and $325 later we are back at the campground. After talking to friends who have had this happen and reading the posts here I have a few quistions. I dont mind doing my own work but from what I have been reading , after fixing the bike all the fix is just putting the crap back the way it was, is there not a better sprocket ,better setup than stock. Why is can am getting away with this?as you can tell I am a bit pissed,we just left for a 3 month vacation and now no bike. Been riding and working on bikes for over 30 years, all kind of bikes and never was there not a better aftermarket part I could not get to make something better. as I said I dont mind the work, but to replace with the same crap just seems stupid. Thnks for letting me vent.

Pull the front pulley, I'll bet the splines are toast, but the tranny shaft should be OK. BRP came out with an updated front pulley - it's white and reports are, it's a big improvement. Good luck.

Be sure to get some moly paste for the spline when you install the new one. A new bolt is recommended also. Part numbers are here in other threads, along with torque spec.

It is always a good idea to check your front sprocket every 5,000 miles. This could save a disaster in the future.

Order a sprocket from a 2021 spyder. 28 tooth 705502134 <- old # - 705503239 <- new number "built after sept 2020" bcuz BRP won't admit there's a problem else $$$$. The new version is white. Don't take it out of the shop if it's not WHITE.

My RT just clicked over 10,000 miles so after seeing this post I climbed underneath and found the front pulls. Luckily no red dust. Now that I’m paranoid I will continue checking on a regular basis.

Is this a standard part that I could retrofit on my 2015 F3S or would that be a different number?

To clear up some confusion here - all the research I've done and seen states that the White Pulley had the outside of the pulley changed (how the belt spins on it) and the paint - to help the Whistling noise. There is NO change to how the inner part of the pulley that meets the shaft splines are done. This pulley was never intended to fix the "red dust of death" - it was intended to quiet the whine that some folks complain about. If the black pulley is installed correctly with Moly Paste and correct Torque it "should" be just fine. And if the white pulley isn't installed correctly, it's just as capable of red dust and failure. I replaced my pulley with the black one using Honda Moly Paste M77. On all the Spyders that I work on - I take the time to visually inspect the pulley to make sure I can warn my friends/customers early if there are signs of the red dust.
